I was very disappointed that a steak restaurant could not cook a medium rare steak. I had to send back the first one - it was well done. The waiter then suggested I order a rare steak to get what I wanted. The steak that eventually came was fine. I asked for a free glass of wine for my trouble but nothing else was offered.

This restaurant is set within the Marriott hotel in County Hall on the South Bank. We started with some drinks in the bar, where the service, surroundings and drinks were superb. Moving into the restaurant, the surroundings were very comfortable and the atmosphere friendly and relaxed. We were eating from the Bookatable special offer menu and chose Veal & Smoked Streaky Bacon Skewers and Crispy Fried Squid. Both of which were well cooked and presented. For the main course, my wife chose the Sticky Tiptree BBQ Sauce Belly of Pork and I had the Rib Eye steak. This for me, was the major disappointment of the evening. I asked for the steak to be medium but what I received I would classify as well done. It was dry and chewy and only saved by the Béarnaise sauce I ordered with it. The sides that were served with it were fine, but considering that this restaurant describes itself as a steakhouse the quality of the steak left a lot to be desired. I didn't complain at the time as this would have disrupted the evening waiting for another steak to be cooked. For dessert I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding and my wife had Raspberry and Tarragon Pavlova, both of which were fine but nothing special. Overall we both felt that the quality of the food on the whole really didn't meet the quality you would expect from a restaurant set in a 5 star hotel. However the service in both the bar and restaurant was exemplary and befitting of what you would expect.

We've eaten here several times over the years and it's now pretty pricey. This time, however, we had a good deal to celebrate our daughter's birthday (there were ten of us), but the service was very slow and it was difficult to catch a waiter's eye. Eventually, we spoke to the manager, who said they had a problem with the gas in the kitchen. We were given extra glasses of bubbly while we were waiting. When the food eventually came (although not all at once, and my daughter was kept waiting for ages), some meals were cold and had to be sent back. They took them of the bill. By the end of the evening, we were weary and wanting the experience to be over. I will not dine there again.

We visited Gillrays for lunch to celebrate my husbands birthday. We arrived early and although our table was ready we had a drink in the bar first where the service was very prompt. On being seated the service again was very friendly and prompt. We had booked the set menu and unfortunately the two starters that we wanted were both unavailable. On querying this it was agreed that we could have a risotto starter and the soup that we were told was unavailable was suddenly back on the menu. We all had steak as a main course and all the steaks were correctly cooked. The food was all of excellent quality, very tasty and well presented. The service was slightly slow but I understand that everything is cooked to order and it was certainly worth waiting for. Our waitress was excellent as were the other dinning room staff. Just before we were ready to leave the chef sent up a dessert with Happy birthday on it for my husband. This was a lovely touch and very much appreciated by us all. I would certainly book again at this resturant. I would like to thank the staff for their excellent service and the chef for wonderful food and the birthday surprise.
