Described as ‘pulling on the heartstrings of nostalgia’ by acclaimed critic Fay Maschler, Geales Notting Hill offers superbly fresh fish and seafood. A neighbourhood favourite established in 1939, Geales celebrates glorious Great British cuisine in a sustainable fashion.
Branded as London’s ‘posh fish and chippy’, the Geales menu offers hearty comfort food with a sophisticated edge. Sourcing from sustainable fish stocks, perfectly grilled fillets sit next to the nation’s favourite, cod in crispy batter. Specials come fresh from Devon and Cornwall, and favourites include dressed crab, salmon and leek fishcakes and oysters straight from the bar.
Continuing the British theme, classic desserts at Geales Notting Hill include bread and butter pudding with Baileys custard, all washed down with dandelion and burdock or cream soda.
Subdued yet chic, Geales London offsets glossy grey walls and black leather benches with glittering antique mirrors. Notting Hill Gate Tube Station is just 2 minutes’ walk away.

I ordered grilled skate fish. It was tasty and moist. The price was reasonable.
My friend was supposed to order ”fish & chips” but she wanted a healthier option. In the end the restaurant manager was very accommodating and offered to have salad rather than chips.
We did not order any alcohol drinks so we could not comment.

First the bad bit - service was really terrible - not altogether the fault of the head of the team but still - we had to wait ages for the wine, we ordered two different fish (haddock and hake) both plain grilled but the haddock came battered (we didn't bother to complain as at that stage it was clear that everyone was under pressure). Our side order of spinach turned up when we'd finished our main course (we ate it anyway - it was fresh and very well cooked!). The fish was very good, chips crisp, the Muscadet cold, so nothing wrong in the cooking bit of the kitchen, and we were given various discounts on the bill to compensate for what was obviously a bit of a difficult evening, so they did their best to compensate. Having said all that we've been going to Geales for years and obviously we'll still go - just hope they sort out their staff problems for next time!
