Restaurant description

Fittingly housed next door to one of the world’s most famous meat markets, Gaucho Smithfield specialises in premium Argentine steaks. A cool, New York-style ambience comes courtesy of glittering glass panels and leather-clad circular booths.

A renowned Argentinian steakhouse, Gaucho continues to serve some of the finest beef in the world, now complemented by a broader food and wine offering in a contemporary setting. Taking inspiration from modern Argentina and all of its global influences, fresh ingredients are used to create signature dishes such as steak with a choice of béarnaise or chimichurri sauce, pan-seared bream with pickled fennel and dill, and wild mushroom tagliatelle with Torrontés cream and tarragon.

Desserts at Gaucho in London are equally enticing, whilst classic and signature cocktails are joined by an impressive selection of wines from South America and beyond. Contemporary and edgy, Gaucho restaurants feature swathes of plush leather in dramatically decorated dining rooms.

Perched between the thriving City and creative hub of Clerkenwell, Smithfield Gaucho draws in an eclectic, fashionable crowd. Barbican Station is a 4-minute walk away.

We arrived earlier than planned but not a problem, seated us in the bar and ordered cocktails. At the appointed time we were asked if we wanted to move to the table and our drinks quickly followed us. Maitre de was excellent, on hand when required and organised the serving team well. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the wine and made good recommendations about the Bookatable menu options. Service continued to be efficient and unobtrusive. We spent a lovely two and a half hours celebrating my daughters graduation, the restaurant team recognised this with a tailored dessert! The one down side would be the massively overpriced wine. How can a cocktail (just under £10, expensive, but London price) be less than a glass of mid range red (£14.50, nice, but not £14.50 a glass nice!) The food was good value even with the Filet Steak upgrade, just a shame about the drinks prices. Did not detract from an excellent experience, thanks to the Tuesday evening team at Gaucho Smithfield.

We really enjoyed our experience and meal here. Our server Marcelo went above and beyond, we always have excellent service at Gaucho but Marcelo really stood out.

The staff were very attentive but the restaurant was empty and so hugely lacking in ambience. The meat was delicious, they really do know their stuff, however we left feeling quite disappointed in the cost as although we had a nice meal, we were in and out within the hour and spent a huge amount on a one course dinner with one glass of wine. The experience was hugely lacking and we will not be returning.

Excellent service but considering they specialise in steaks mine was medium when asked for medium rare. They did give a replacement with new sides. Bernaise sauce tasteless. Looks like a 1980s nightclub which some might like!

Lovely restaurant. Delicious food! Very friendly and informative staff. Good value 3 course meal. Only problem booked thorough Bookatable and they didn’t have my booking when we arrived. Wasn’t a problem as the restaurant was empty when we got there. Also it said a Hendrix cocktail was included. All good e got was a shot of Hendrix gin!! No cocktail. A bit misleading. All in all a good dinner experience. Thank you!
