I booked a special evening dining experience at the Gallery Mess six weeks in advance of my visit to London for the Chelsea Flower Show. I specifically requested a WINDOW seat. The deal was a three course meal for three with a complimentary Mimosa cocktail. On the morning of our booking we were waking past and popped in just to remind the maître d'hôtel that we wanted a window seat. 'No problem, we'll look after you'. When we arrived a few hours later at 6.30pm for our meal we were given an outdoor seat. Tgis wasnt what we wanted so were shown to a table inside not at the wondow! The restayrant wasnt that busy but hey ho, I'd only requested it six weeks in advance...thats hard to get right - right???? So we were seated (at the back) and I asked for our cocktail, @were not doing that menu now said the Md'H, you shouldve had an email. So instead of 3 courses for £26 with cocktail we were offered £28.50 for two courses and you can sing for your cocktail!!! When the meals came the portions were minute, honestly the fish was the size of a credit card and the chicken breast was about a third of a whole breast, sliced up into a small piece. The dessert was probably the best bit, a lemon tart with fab sorbet. Also expensive at £39 for a bottle of Marlborough Estate SB. So, as a family we were prepared to suffer the changes etc and the tiny portions and reneging on the deal. However, when we received the bill and saw the 12.5% discretionary service charge we werent repared to pay the full price. We took £10 off the service charge. When the waiter took our payment he said we MUST pay the service chrage in FULL. We pointed out that it was discretionary. It was very lucky we had a lawyer as one of our guests who was quick to point out the facts to the waiter, who quickly backed down. So it was a fitting end to a very disappointing meal. I will not go back there and recommend that no one else does either!!! Over priced, underseasoned, small portions and bad service!

We had afternoon tea. It was great to have a children's option. Staff were friendly and service good. Didn't have a large range of teas available that day, but not a big deal.

The whole experience was very disappointing.

A bit disappointing. The restaurant only had nine people inside on a lovely sunny evening. The outside terrace closed at 7pm.
My husband's starter was very small, really not much more than a mouthful. I had a beetroot salad starter which was OK.
A Mimosa cocktail was included in the deal but my husband does not drink anything gassy so we asked to change it to a glass of house wine which cost an extra pound.
Paper covering on table cloth and paper napkin not great.

Good service but Food was very dissapointing. Both the children’s and adult afternoon tea.

The location is lovely, but on a hot summers day both the tables outside and those in the window were simply too hot - Movable or bigger umbrellas ? blinds ? That said staff were helpful and accommodating and moved us when asked. Two gripes about the menu - no issue with the quality, but the asparagus starter was minuscule - Asparagus is in season and cheap at the moment, you can afford to be generous - by contrast the pressed chicken leg was too big - thats a fairly solid lump of protein they are serving ! My guest had ordered Roast Beef - and his plate appeared with only vegetables and yorkshire pudding - no roast beef! - however did that get through the Pass ??? Staff dealt with this quickly and politely, but non the less he ate some 10/15 minutes behind us - and there wasn't really a proper apology from a manager or chef -

I would come back - but possibly not for lunch or certainly not to entertain overseas guests which was what I was doing - I've been before for drinks/ tea / casual lunches and I had thought we would be in a great central semi outdoor location in safe culinary hands - only partially true !

The food was very well presented and delicious. Service was attentive without being intrusive. A nice setting for a meal. Given the number of free tables available I did not understand why we were seated right next to another occupied table. Wine menu seemed overpriced given the selections on offer.

I went for afternoon tea and the experience was exactly what I wanted. The environment was nice and it provided the level of sophistication I expected based on the price. The choices for tea were a bit lacking though, other places I went for tea had an entire page of options while Gallery Mess only had 4 options. One issue I had (might be a European thing because it happened at other places too) was after we had finished our meal and tea we had to wait a long time to get our check and eventually had to wave down our waiter to get it.

The restaurant is lovely with some tables having the view of the green field which is pleasant. The main course was good but the portion of the starter was a bit too small. The brownie was good.
