A long-time favourite on the bustling Clapham High Street, ESCA has recently been given a stunning transformation. Now featuring a bustling open kitchen with leaping flames, and with a industrial shabby chic interior with colourful murals, enjoy versatile all-day dining with influences from around the globe.

The ESCA menu is bursting with eclectic flavours, and takes inspiration from British, Celtic and Latin cooking. Meat and vegetarian takes on the full English are popular brunch choices, with other options including the gourmet truffle-infused Hollandaise with asparagus and wild mushroom on an English muffin. Later in the day, there are small plates of juicy skewers, pasta delicacies like squid ink risotto, and larger mains of grilled fillet steak, and lightly smoked half chicken.

    The food was good and the staff were friendly, but the service was chaotic. We went for Saturday brunch and the restaurant was about three quarters full. I ordered a coffee twice which never came and they lost our food order, so it took 45 minutes to be served our food. When it came, some of the order was wrong and had to be sent back. The manager was apologetic and discounted our bill, but I’d sadly think twice about dining here again as it was not a relaxing experience.

    Underwhelming. This is possibly the best way to describe our dining experience. The smoked aubergine dip we had for starters had no flavour whatsoever (although liked the bread it came with!). My first, second, and third mains option wasn't available and ended up ordering the sausage Bolognese tagliatelle. Again, not much flavour there either. One of us had the grilled chicken, which had to be sent back to be cooked a bit longer. Yes, we were served [raw] chicken! Sorry to say, but don't think we'll be back. And I didn't mention the seafood risotto - it looked like some sort of rice porridge. Overall, very poor value for money.

    I used to go to Esca all the time in the grid old days - then they had a refurb / then another refurb, and this was my first visit back. Sad to say I was disappointed - the restaurant was far from full, but it took quite a while a) to be given a menu and b)have our orders taken. Even though we had a conversation about me being Coeliac and having to eat gluten-free, my dish arrived with a slab on toast on the top. My friend had ordered a smoothie - 10 minutes later it hadn't arrived so he asked another waiter, who then told him they'd run out of smoothies. I really wasn't convinced that they had enough knowledge of gluten-free eating; and in fact didn't feel 'quite right' for the rest of the day.

    I've been to Esca twice since it opened a month or two ago and the two experiences couldn't have been more different. The first time we went, the restaurant had just opened and so the service was amazing, super quick, the food was excellent and the waiters were incredibly helpful. Unfortunately the second time I had booked a table for a specific time and was told on arrival that someone else was sitting on it and we would have to wait. We were seated 20 minutes later and the waiter proceeded to get our order wrong, insisting that was what we had ordered, it was double the price of course. I ordered the same thing previously so knew this wasn't correct. The bill was corrected but the attitude of our waiter did not go down well in the group and it soured the evening a bit.

    I cannot complain about the food however as it was still excellent quality and tasted lovely, especially the large meat tasting platter which lets you try all of their most popular dishes.

    We love the result of the recent renovation. We went for dinner on a Friday evening with friends, and even though we tend to like different things there was something on the menu for everyone. The smoked pork ribs were outstanding and the kale salad a healthy, hearty and delicious side. The men at the table loved, but couldn't finish the generous meat platter. Yum!
