Restaurant description

Owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English’s of Brighton is the oldest restaurant in the city, found on a site with a rich 150-year history of seafood. Take a seat at the oyster bar and chat away to the head oysterman whilst your oysters are opened in front of you, and Prosecco flows from a tap. Alternatively, choose from 2 floors of dining rooms, or a table out on the heated terrace.

The English’s of Brighton menu reflects its heritage. Seasonal creations excite and inspire, while all the classics you would expect from a seafood restaurant are also on offer. The extensive wine list boasts over 100 wines, each handpicked by Simon Leigh-Jones.

For those not in the mood for seafood, English’s offer an exquisite meat menu, including steak and kidney pudding in the colder months, and plates that aren’t just for vegetarians.

Tucked away in the heart of The Lanes, a few minutes from the seafront and Brighton railway station, English’s of Brighton encompass everything you’re looking for in a seafood restaurant and more.

The food was imaginative and very tasty. I particularly liked the Dover Sole which was excellently filleted by the waiter after cooking.

One of the best Sunday roasts I have eaten out! There was a goid choice on mdnud and the roast was served with beautifully cooked veg. Quality was outstanding. Loved every bit of it. Will go back when in area.

This was my first experience of going to a restaurant since lockdown, so we wanted to go somewhere special! My friend and I had a bit of uneasiness, not being sure how different eating out would feel. In the restaurant, obviously a lot of the seating and tables have been removed. The new layout provides adequate distance from other guests, but not too far apart to make it feel as though we were eating in there alone. It still had a fun, vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. The staff were excellent as always, face masks didn’t limit their interaction with us. That didn’t feel strange at all as we thought it might. We had the hot oysters the seafront platter.. and too much Prosecco! Excellent food, great evening, and more importantly right now.. we felt safe eating in there!

First class meal - superlative! Smoked eel, fish pie and possibly the best cheese plate I've ever had. I will be taking about it for years to come.

Really lovely to go back , fewer tables now of course we sat inside but busy outside on dining area. Would rather waiters weren’t wearing masks but realise that it’s early days yet . Served very courteously.Very nice food oysters and lobster and steak and kidney pudding for my husband. My one complaint is that the lovely old interior was modernised a few years ago and it seems very stark but other than that all good .
