Owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English’s of Brighton is the oldest restaurant in the city, found on a site with a rich 150-year history of seafood. Take a seat at the oyster bar and chat away to the head oysterman whilst your oysters are opened in front of you, and Prosecco flows from a tap. Alternatively, choose from 2 floors of dining rooms, or a table out on the heated terrace.
The English’s of Brighton menu reflects its heritage. Seasonal creations excite and inspire, while all the classics you would expect from a seafood restaurant are also on offer. The extensive wine list boasts over 100 wines, each handpicked by Simon Leigh-Jones.
For those not in the mood for seafood, English’s offer an exquisite meat menu, including steak and kidney pudding in the colder months, and plates that aren’t just for vegetarians.
Tucked away in the heart of The Lanes, a few minutes from the seafront and Brighton railway station, English’s of Brighton encompass everything you’re looking for in a seafood restaurant and more.

Great quality food served by friendly staff with style.. Not a pretentious restaurant at all. Staff were knowledgeable about wines and advised with great skill and the results were fabulous we had great food with perfectly recommended wines. Oysters were exceptional and very fresh, Fish pie was outstanding with shellfish on the top.

We enjoyed our meal very much ,We have been before and have found the quality perfect on each occasion. our waiter was attentive & informative,a hungarian with perfect english and a friendly manner. They are also one of the few restaurants to offer a Cloudy Prosecco ,this has a little more flavour than the usual Prosecco

As a treat for my friend, I wanted to take her to a fish restaurant in Brighton. I wanted it to have a laid back atmosphere and an unpretentious style. I wanted discreet staff. Oh yeah and I great fish.
Well, we certainly got all of those things. The highlight, in many ways, was sitting at the ancient oyster bar at the beginning of the meal and being walked through the selection of English oysters that were on offer by the inimitable, Johnny. His knowledge and passion for the oysters and everything else on the menu absolutely set the scene for a lovely evening a great meal with top notch wine.

Sea bass fillet very small, batter on cod was over cooked - not the best meal we’ve had there.

Outstanding, good quality, delicious food. My friend and I both had smoked mackeral followed by the amazing pumpkin seed brownie, an absolute must! My second time to English's and now a permanent restaurant on my return list! If you go to Brighton go to English's. The staff were very attentive, friendly and warm. Do go!
