Owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English’s of Brighton is the oldest restaurant in the city, found on a site with a rich 150-year history of seafood. Take a seat at the oyster bar and chat away to the head oysterman whilst your oysters are opened in front of you, and Prosecco flows from a tap. Alternatively, choose from 2 floors of dining rooms, or a table out on the heated terrace.
The English’s of Brighton menu reflects its heritage. Seasonal creations excite and inspire, while all the classics you would expect from a seafood restaurant are also on offer. The extensive wine list boasts over 100 wines, each handpicked by Simon Leigh-Jones.
For those not in the mood for seafood, English’s offer an exquisite meat menu, including steak and kidney pudding in the colder months, and plates that aren’t just for vegetarians.

Englishs is a must visit destination for visitors to Brighton. The food (especially fish and seafood) is exceptional and the staff knowledgeable and friendly. A brilliant experience and proves why it has been there since 1945!!! I will go again, and again...!

Excellent room, elegant and welcoming, with comfy seats and a bright fresh décor. Wonderful service, with a welcome from the M.D. on our arrival, and a charmingly efficient, unobtrusive waitress. Food fresh, crisp and beautifully presented, with a day menu that was remarkable value for money The entire experience was quite faultless.

Average .. staff very professional, friendly and welcoming. Decor a little jaded and in want of a bit of care and attention. Food tasty but a bit fussy and over priced for what we got.

Picked this restaurant based on it's extensive seafood menu whilst on holiday in Brighton. It was an excellent choice. We had a roasted fruits de mere to share which is something you don't often see on menu's and it was great. A combination of white fish (whole Sea Bass and Plaice), and shell fish (Oysters, Jumbo Prawns, Clams Scallops) etc, all cooked the way they should be - moist and flavoursome. The staff were very knowledgeable about both the food menu and wine list which was good to see. This is not a cheap restaurant, but we thought it was worth it based on the quality of what we had and would recommend it to anyone who likes their seafood.

The menu was impressive which is what attracted us to English's. The staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive. Sadly, while the food was generally okay, it did not really match up to our expectations bearing in mind the a la carte prices charged. There were only two scallops in one of the starters. The Dover Sole was almost tough. The Lemon Sole fillets were very small and I am still not convinced that Lemon Sole goes well with a mushroom sauce! On checking the retail price of the wine, it appears that the mark up was nearly 200 per cent, ie from about £10 to £32.
