Owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English’s of Brighton is the oldest restaurant in the city, found on a site with a rich 150-year history of seafood. Take a seat at the oyster bar and chat away to the head oysterman whilst your oysters are opened in front of you, and Prosecco flows from a tap. Alternatively, choose from 2 floors of dining rooms, or a table out on the heated terrace.
The English’s of Brighton menu reflects its heritage. Seasonal creations excite and inspire, while all the classics you would expect from a seafood restaurant are also on offer. The extensive wine list boasts over 100 wines, each handpicked by Simon Leigh-Jones.
For those not in the mood for seafood, English’s offer an exquisite meat menu, including steak and kidney pudding in the colder months, and plates that aren’t just for vegetarians.
Tucked away in the heart of The Lanes, a few minutes from the seafront and Brighton railway station, English’s of Brighton encompass everything you’re looking for in a seafood restaurant and more.

The meal was lovely and the surroundings were very relaxing.
Our waitress was attentive once she realised that my husband liked to keep his wine glass topped up.
It was slightly off putting when the waiting staff are talking in their own language. This shouldn’t be allowed as diners may think they’re talking about something that they don’t want the customers to hear.

We sat outside, and had a 3 course meal from the set menu which was 3 courses for £28. I had the chicken liver parfait to start (best I have ever had) my partner had lobster and prawn croquet, for mains I had the lemon sole and my partner had the monkfish tail and for pudding I had dark chocolate yogurt semifreddo and my partner had the mango frangipan tart. The whole meal was delicious would highly recommend! The waiters were attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The only negative was when a man approached the table for contributions to the music - I hadn’t seen him or really heard his music he was playing outside another restaurant so not sure why he approached us.

We have not dined here for several years as it has always been full. To make sure we got a table we booked. The food and service was as good as we remembered.
A truly great evening. We will be going again.

A very enjoyable lunch with friends. Moules mariieres followed by an excellent piece of fish. I was less sure about the rye bread base which was soggy. Wine selection was good. Service was attentive and prompt..

This is one of my favourite restaurants, a timeless classic. Fabulous Lobster Thermidor washed down with a great reasonably priced house wine, for pudding, a Lemon curd Mille feuille, nearly perfect, the pastry has lost its leaves. The service was impeccable without being intrusive.
