Owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English’s of Brighton is the oldest restaurant in the city, found on a site with a rich 150-year history of seafood. Take a seat at the oyster bar and chat away to the head oysterman whilst your oysters are opened in front of you, and Prosecco flows from a tap. Alternatively, choose from 2 floors of dining rooms, or a table out on the heated terrace.

We last visited this restaurant 8 years ago and have always wanted to return. As it was a hot evening we sat outside and were greeted by very attentive staff. Obviously fish is what the place is all about and we started with a dozen raw which were fantastic. They were presented on a tray of ice. The Nyetimber English sparking wine was the perfect partner being dry and refreshing. Main courses were the Dover Soul and that Halibut both served on the bone. The clam and shrimp sauce with the Halibut had a deep richness. Both servings were fresh, cooked to perfection and well presented. A glass of Armagnac and a glass of Calvados completed the perfect evening. A great combination of fantastic food and excellent service I would highly recommend.

Excellent food, first class and impeccable service, great atmosphere. My wife had the Whole Dover Sole A Le Meunière and it was the best she has ever had. Not a particularly big fish eater I had the Halibut on the recommendation of our waitress and I must say it was amazing, and the largest portion I have ever had. The fact it also came with a plate of clams and brown shrimps made me feel I had 3 dishes for the price of one ?? For desert I had the Raspberry milefueille and it was to die for, scrummy!!!

Have known the restaurant for more than fifty years, though now only dine there occasionally. When our daughter visited from Australia, and yesterday as celebration of diamond wedding with two of our children. Has become something of a family tradition.
