Owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English’s of Brighton is the oldest restaurant in the city, found on a site with a rich 150-year history of seafood. Take a seat at the oyster bar and chat away to the head oysterman whilst your oysters are opened in front of you, and Prosecco flows from a tap. Alternatively, choose from 2 floors of dining rooms, or a table out on the heated terrace.

The English’s of Brighton menu reflects its heritage. Seasonal creations excite and inspire, while all the classics you would expect from a seafood restaurant are also on offer. The extensive wine list boasts over 100 wines, each handpicked by Simon Leigh-Jones.

For those not in the mood for seafood, English’s offer an exquisite meat menu, including steak and kidney pudding in the colder months, and plates that aren’t just for vegetarians.

    I have been before a few years back and wanted to revisit. Location is in the lanes and there are plenty of nice pubs nearby. The restaurant is really attractive with white table cloths and immaculately laid tables. I started with muscles they were terrific taste and portion size were excellent. I had the lobster and crab pasta for main which was tasty but the pasta was quite thick for my liking. Everyone else had fish for main and they were very complimentary of the food. We had a table for 4 and everyone enjoyed the food and commented on what a great restaurant it was. Service was very attentive but not over the top. Wine list was reasonably priced the Gruner Weitliner was very reasonably priced and overall the bill was good value for the quality of food ambience and service. Under £300 including service with all 4 of us having 3 courses and two bottles of wine and pre dinner drinks. This restaurant has been around for many years and will hopefully be around for many more. Sorry I don’t live closer. Treat yourself you won’t regret a visit.

    First visit to English’s on a Saturday evening at 19.00. Meet and greet was slow left standing in entrance not sure what to do. Then up a very steep staircase to the next floor (difficult for my husband as he has Parkinson’s ) I didn’t see any info about 2nd floor on website. Might be worth a mention. Taken to a table right at the end of the floor which was ok. Only ok!! Other than these details the rest of the evening was exemplary. Quiet the best restaurant I have been to in Brighton. Food was delicious staff were excellent. We were there for 3 hours and it was a magical experience. It was my husbands birthday and it was noted with a candle and happy birthday written beautifully on his pudding plate. Will definitely return but will try to book on the ground floor. Thank you all for a lovely evening.

    Good menu and good wine list reasonably priced I think the main chef must have had a night off because the cooking was disappointing. Thin sauce and overcooked fish in my stew. Waiting staff friendly and keen so the food issues a surprise.

    Very good food indeed.wonderful oysters.only criticism was the size of the fish portion in the fish and chips.It was vast.Far,Far too big.

    The restaurant was very welcoming, the service was excellent. I had the avocado soup with crab meat to start - which was very interesting and lovely although it could possibly of done with a touch more crab meat and maybe a swirl of balsamic reduction or something. My wife had the lobster and prawn croquettes, they too were lovely. I had the whole Plaice for my main which was cooked to perfection, I liked the hazelnuts with it and also thought that was an interesting and nice addition although I would have preferred it if they were finely chopped as they were quite fiddly to eat. I also felt as though the endive could have been charred to add extra flavour. My Dauphinois potatoes which came with my main were not the highlight, they needed more liquid in them during cooking and as a result they were quite dry, they had also been over seasoned with nutmeg which didn’t compliment the rest of my food. I think garlic dauphinois would have been better. I would have served them on a separate dish also as they didn’t really fit on the plate with the whole Plaice. My wife had the lemon sole fillets with mushroom risotto which was very nice and had an amazing flavour, she felt the risotto rice was under cooked but I thought it was fine - I think that that is more the result of us British preferring our rice and pasta more cooked than those from the continent! The wine selection was excellent and the Brazilian white we had went very well with our food. I felt also that parts of the decor could do with updating however I did like the vintage feel to it. I also felt that our dinner was priced perfectly for the food and service, at about £130 I was very happy to spend that for what we had received. These are very small things and overall we had an excellent evening, I have already recommended to friends!

    Beautiful lobster, great steak. My sister had marvellous, generous prawns and my girlfriend enjoyed a huge and wonderfully cooked plaice. A nice selection of wines and local beers, and a table with a view. A splendid evening. Thank you. Will come again!
