Restaurant description

Owned by the Leigh-Jones family since 1945, English’s of Brighton is the oldest restaurant in the city, found on a site with a rich 150-year history of seafood. Take a seat at the oyster bar and chat away to the head oysterman whilst your oysters are opened in front of you, and Prosecco flows from a tap. Alternatively, choose from 2 floors of dining rooms, or a table out on the heated terrace.

The English’s of Brighton menu reflects its heritage. Seasonal creations excite and inspire, while all the classics you would expect from a seafood restaurant are also on offer. The extensive wine list boasts over 100 wines, each handpicked by Simon Leigh-Jones.

For those not in the mood for seafood, English’s offer an exquisite meat menu, including steak and kidney pudding in the colder months, and plates that aren’t just for vegetarians.

Tucked away in the heart of The Lanes, a few minutes from the seafront and Brighton railway station, English’s of Brighton encompass everything you’re looking for in a seafood restaurant and more.

Amazing food and service. The fresh fish sharing platter was so good! We can’t wait to return. It was my fiancés birthday and the staff went out of their way to make our whole experience very memorable. Will definitely be booking again for our next visit to Brighton

Booked to celebrate my 60th birthday. Food and wine were delicious and service was relaxed and friendly. Only downside was being seated facing the serving table so view of dirty dishes and food coming and going.

We had a really lovely evening at English's celebrating a special birthday. The service was very attentive, without being over-bearing. Very friendly atmosphere. The food was amazing, the best dover sole I have ever eaten! Little touches like a glass of celebratory fizz on arrival and 'Happy Birthday' on the pudding plate all made a very positive difference to the overall experience. Thank you!

Excellent service Good choice of fish on menu, unfortunately no fish of the day or fish stew available but plenty to choose from. Reasonable prices for very good food.

A really warm welcome and taken straight to our table, menus provided really quickly along with chilled water. Left to review the menus with no pressure, all questions around the menu answered in a clear and polite manner. Wine was superb and the fish of the day was the best I've had. Cannot recommend this venue highly enough

Over the years I've often dined at English's, which is a traditional fish restaurant in the Lanes. While my fresh oysters and Dover Sole were good, my wife selected the fixed price lunch menu. Her main dish (seabass) a supposed specialty was lukewarm and over-cooked. On mentioning this to a waiter his comment was "Sorry about that". We will not return

Delicious fresh fish very well cooked. Friendly staff who gave us a glass of bubbly as a birthday treat. Rather old fashioned decor and atmosphere but that suites people like us who cannot cope with the noisy modern gastro restaurants!

We had the festive set menu. Food was good, good choice on the menu and staff were helpful and attentive. We will definitely be back!
