Darwin's Kitchen is the latest addition to Shrewsbury-based company The DiTella Group, also comprising of The Loopy Shrew and Darwin's Townhouse. Head Chef Daniel Brearley has carefully created a wide ranging menu offering guests a social dining experience in a warm and inviting environment, perfect for any occasion any time of day. Cosy up on the sofas with your morning coffee and paper and watch the world go by, catch up with friends in their tropical, leafy conservatory or treat your nearest and dearest to dinner in The Dining Room, a firm nod to Charles Darwin's roots and style.
The Kitchen offers an eclectic choice of small and big plates including British favourites. Tuck into hearty dishes like sticky orange and garlic rump of lamb with crushed garlic heritage potatoes or trio of Wenlock Edge sausages with root vegetable mash. Mini crab cakes with sweetcorn and scallion salsa or pork gyoza with Thai mushroom broth provide lighter options. Vegetarians can choose from dishes like buffalo mozzarella with confit of heritage tomatoes or beetroot and goats cheese arancini with aged balsamic.
You could round off with pear and blackberry Eton mess or blood orange meringue pie. The wine list has been carefully selected from local wine merchants, offering a list with a difference. There’s more choice with an enticing array of cocktails, beers and spirits.
Darwin’s Kitchen is a 6-minute walk from Shrewsbury Train Station. It also boasts four boutique bedrooms, including one luxurious suite and 3 superior doubles. Perfect for a midweek treat or weekend getaway.

The initial drinks were a bit slow in arriving, even though it was quiet, and had to chased up. The meal was very tasty and good value. The chicken fajita was absolutely delicious with lovely sauces and the steak was perfectly cooked and tender. The atmosphere was great, a good buzz but not noisy with good background music. The interior was attractive and quirky, and the staff were very pleasant and attentive.

Friendly and fast service. Very good food. Main courses were very large. Noisy, bustling atmosphere.

Unfortunately it was a shambles from start to finish. Music so loud in the bar you couldn't hear yourself speak. No staff on the bar. Mopping floor leaving it slippery with no apologies or comment. Really poor staff apart from the poor girl who served us. Not her fault. At £20 for an 8oz rump steak I expected a lovely meal. Steak overcooked and flavourless, meagre portion of soggy chips, rubbish salad and raw tomato that was described as sloiw cooked! Complained and presented with a better steak but it really wasn't good. My friend had chicken fajitas which were also less than satisfactory. A real disappointment. I felt there was a total lack of staff training and a pretty poor chef.

We had to wait a very long time for the waiter to take our order - around 20 minutes, followed by a 45 minute wait for the a rial meal. My steak was supposed to be medium rare but it turned out to be well done, while my friend's 'medium' looked very raw.

We were greeted very warmly and the place looked nice. However that was the only positive. The service was slow to non-existent and the food was at best hit and miss. Nobody finished their meal apart from the lucky steak eater and any chance of a dessert to take away the taste of the fatty, over cooked short ribs was lost with the entirely absent waiter. The table next to us was left uncleared and we eventually realised that no-one was coming so we went to the till ourselves to pay and escape. The restaurant was not at all busy and I completely understand why.

Second time visiting the porterhouse, staff are amazing!!! So helpful and friendly, food was very tasty, the only slight criticism I have is that the tables are a little to close together and felt as though we had to whisper as we were so close to the 'neighbours', I had burrito which was delicious but way too hot!! My friend had finished her meal and there was still steam coming of it! The overall experience at this hotel is still wonderful and wouldn't hesitate in booking again.
