Perfectly positioned at the corner of George IV Bridge and the Royal Mile, just steps from Edinburgh Castle, the Radisson Hotel is in the heart of Edinburgh. Open all day from breakfast until late, Cucina at G&V Hotel offers a menu of fresh, seasonal and authentic Italian dishes such as oven roasted partridge with balsamic glazed pumpkin or lemon sole with pine kernels and black olives. The exquisite dessert list has innovative decadences like chocolate orange bavarois with mandarin purée and balsamic vinegar ice cream or apple panna cotta with Cox apple petal and Granny Smith apple sorbet.

As the day progresses, the atmosphere changes from open and relaxed at breakfast and lunch to vibrant and intimate for dinner. In the stylish bar, there is afternoon tea to rival the best Edinburgh has to offer.     Staff perfectly pleasant and food OK. The offer for £25 plus a glass of prosecco certainly reasonable value.

    What lets it down massively is the total lack of ambience. Restaurant so dark and gloomy it looks as if they are working on emergency lighting and as if half the restaurant is out of action.

    We chose to come here as we had been at a function in the Tartan Room. Due to a complete absence of visible signage we didn't realise that Cucina was on the same floor a very short distance from the function, resulting in a lengthy wander down one flight of stairs to the ground floor and up again by other stairs. When we eventually found it we had a long wait before anyone appeared to acknowledge our arrival and take us to our table. Overall impression of the dining area was of lurid and eccentric colourful decor toned down by keeping the lighting very gloomy.

    Limited choices on the menu: we both started with the gravadlax which was a decent sized portion served with three tiny coin sized blini, orange fish roe (probably salmon roe - calling it caviar was a bit fanciful), and crème fraiche. For her main course my wife had the smoked haddock fishcake with spinach and poached egg. I chose the crab tortellini. The fishcake was described as 'alright, but a bit too crispy on the outside', my tortellini were served on a small smear of a leek and shallot slurry which the menu called a fondue. As the plate was cold the food itself was a bit tepid - all good flavours, but rather a small portion.

    Service was friendly enough but rather slow, so we didn't linger for coffee.

    Everything rather expensive for what it was - given the array of other restaurants nearby they could do with making much more effort and giving better value.

    Arrived to be told the gas was off in the kitchen so only limited choice from menu available, which strangely enough happened to be all of the cheaper options

    We are regular diners at Cucina because we enjoy Italian food. However on this visit we were disappointed to see that the menu has moved towards 'international'. So I don't expect to be returning.

    Fantastic service and the Sunday brunch was fabulous with an amazing buffet for starter. Will definitely go again!
