Restaurant description

Awarded an AA Rosette, The Brasserie Bar & Restaurant at Crewe Hall offers a contemporary twist on classic flavours. Afternoon Tea at Crewe Hall is a luxurious treat for those wanting to experience classic dining tradition in a quintessentially British setting.

The grill menu at Crewe Hall showcases prime cuts of meat such as sirloin steak served homemade chips, or roast bone marrow with braised beef brisket and blue cheese. Elsewhere on the menu find the likes of pan-fried sea bass with potato gnocchi, and sticky toffee pudding with sea salt caramel ice cream.

All the traditional treats are served on the Afternoon Tea at Crewe Hall menu, and come beautifully presented. To start, there are delicate finger sandwiches with gourmet fillings like poached chicken with lime and coriander mayonnaise, and English salted cucumber with apple crème fraîche, moving on to home-baked plain and sultana scones served with Cornish clotted cream and red berry preserves.

A luxurious treat in historic surroundings, Crewe Hall is 8 minutes' drive from Crewe Rail Station.

Unfortunately, our visit to the restaurant was not hugely enjoyable: although there were a few positive things which helped, the overall experience was really disappointing, and this was the same at breakfast the following morning. On arrival, we were told our table wasn’t ready so were asked to sit in the bar. We were offered drinks but no choices were given for the gin, which is very unusual these days, and the white wine I ordered was the wrong measure and definitely not chilled. The atmosphere in the bar area was more like an airport lounge, which felt flat and was in stark contrast to the beautiful character of the main building. As in many places at the moment, the menu was much reduced. While we may have expected this, the difference from the one still advertised online was very disappointing, as the options were either steak, another steak, breaded chicken or what felt like very overpriced salads or vegetarian options. Oh, or fish and chips. This seemed a massive step away from the usual options detailed on the website menu which included lamb, sea bass and a number of other much more appealing choices. The bavette steak was cooked to my request, but was massively over seasoned and very salty; my partner’s choice was good as burgers go, but it was not the meal we’d hoped for. The wine choice we wanted wasn’t available, which we know can happen, but meant we spent more on a bottle to find one we wanted as the choices were again limited. The service we received was pleasant and the the redeeming part of the meal was the cheese board at the end, along with the willingness of the waitress to get us additional biscuits to go with this. I realise that it is a separate meal and staffing, but I feel I have to add a comment about how poor the breakfast was. Our food was cold, over cooked, and had very clearly been sitting for a long time, despite us going for breakfast in the middle of service.

Very disappointing... This was a birthday celebration and as such we decided to go to a famous location were we could enjoy good food from a classic menu. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to our expectation. We downloaded the menu from the website which looked excellent, however when we sat at our table we were presented with a typed piece of paper with very little choice. We understand that Covid is having an effect everywhere however there was no indication on the website that there would be a very restricted and cut down menu. there were three of us and ended up with 1 steak meal, one plate of fish and chips and one beef burger. 2 glasses of wine and at a cost of over £70! Also the ambiance in the restaurant was non-existent, basically just a room with tables and chairs. OK it is a Brasserie but even so...

There was no Sunday lunch organised. We were told lunch was in the brasserie after waiting to get in for 10 minutes, after telephoning to find out what was going on was told lunch was in the main hotel, after arriving in the room were told there was only sandwiches available. We travelled two and a half hours to meet my daughter and her husband for a family get together. Most disappointing. I would award it no stars.

Perfectly reasonable meal but nothing special and the style of the restaurant is out of keeping with the hotel.

Crewe Hall is an amazing building but visited for afternoon tea and was very disappointed. There was a really bad musty smell in the lounge area. I appreciate the building is old but it wasn't pleasant and have been in old buildings before and never experienced this. The sandwiches were really quite bland and basic with not a lot of filling on them which was really disappointing but the cakes and scones I am glad to say were slightly better. Overall the experience and quality did not live up to the £25 per person price tag and unfortunately we would not be visiting again.

Great staff; very good afternoon tea but a little expensive for the quality of food received; very nice location but not the best room as was confirmed in the booking; were we sat the carpet had crumbs deposited perhaps should have been cleaned up between customers; overall we had an enjoyable meal & visit.
