I have been to the George Hotel many times before,, This time not as successful : on arrival they had no idea of the booking; but they apologised and found us a table: we had festive afternoon tea, which was very basic- the scones heavy and limp, then there was a shortcake biscuit with marmalade put on top, it felt like a scrimp and scrape job: We go to a lot of afternoon teas but this very disappointing . It didn’t really fell festive .

Absolutely superb! Way better than I was expecting! The Beef was perfectly cooked (Pink but not bloody - just as it should be!) The Veg was also perfect - not raw as some places seem to like to serve it nowadays!! (I think they are under the impression that "Raw" is "Al-Dente" - very annoying!!!!) Service was polite and swift without being rushed. Great experience

We had afternoon tea. The sandwiches were ok, pretty ordinary really, but the scones and cake were excellent. One thing which I found quite inexplicable was the entirely random set of crockery and tea pots, nothing matched. It was as if everything had been picked up in a car boot sale and no attempt had been made to match anything, This made me wonder if you actually had any complete tea services. This was really unacceptable. The staff were ,however, all delightful. The location was decaying, even the window frames on the street front appeared to be rotting. The restaurant and hotel were near empty, despite this being a Sunday afternoon in the height of the summer.

We didnt enjoy this visit to the Courtyard Brassierie at the George Hotel in Colchester. We arrive at 12.00 noon and were promptly shown to our seats. We waited about 10 mins before being asked by a very pleasant gentleman whether anyone had taken our order. Whilst we were waiting, we noticed the areas was not very clean, the toilets smelt and overall the place needed updating and cleaning. The food was ok, however we were ignored by the female waitress when we wanted to pay for the bill. Overall the male members of staff were excellent, but I would like to say we will not be returning to this venue.

This restaurant is like a relic from the 1970s with dark brown stained tables and chairs. The food was very greasy and one of the main courses was almost inedible

Sadly we decided not to eat in the restaurant. We came early and had a drink. The bar staff were not very friendly one rather surly the other handed my husband change from behind his back while concentrating on the till. There did not seem to be other diners, we didn't feel like being the only ones there. We looked at the menu and was not really inspired by it. Arriving was a bit intimidating the door was surrounded by rather rough looking smokers.

Excellent meal in lovely surroundings.

we had to wait half an hour before pots of tea were brought out, a further half an hour until any food arrived and sadly it wasn't worth the wait. The sandwiches were dry and the scones were rock hard. It was not busy during our visit and there appeared to be plenty of staff so not acceptable.
