Restaurant description

Holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand, Comptoir Gascon offers the finest French bistro creations, strongly influenced by bold flavours from south west France. The Comptoir Gascon deli is a rustic food hall with specialist French produce, including fine preserves, fresh bread and foie gras.

A gourmet food lover’s delight in the Smithfield area, Comptoir Gascon Farringdon is a relaxed and cosy dining retreat, named a ‘wonderful French bistro’ by Fay Maschler. The refined wine cellar hosts a range of classy French bottles, while specials on the blackboard display an array of seasonal French gems.

Award-winning duck fat French fries, the famous piggy treats charcuterie selections or the indulgent duck and foie gras burgers are legendary favourites on the Comptoir Gascon menu. Other regional French creations include traditional cassoulet Toulousain, whole grilled sea bass, pan-fried cod and daily changing specials. Fantastic meat cuts including Chateaubriand for 2 and ribeye steak are cooked over the charcoal grill, whilst original lamb, fish, duck or beef burgers are offered at lunch.

On London's Charterhouse Street, Comptoir Gascon London epitomises regional French bistro-style cuisine. Farringdon Tube Station is just a 4-minute walk away.

Had the piggy treats starter and the deluxe duck burger for main. Everything was lovely. A couple of mistakes with the ordering (I think a new waiter) but the problem sorted out swiftly and satisfactorily. Have already recommended to a friend. The gateau basque is highly recommended for dessert

Was OK but I've had better cassoulet. It was a little on the dry side and lacked 'oomph' in the flavour. Was plenty of it if wanted but the beans tended to bag one up. It lacked the bread and grilled Gruyere floating on top. Felt like it was under the grill/hot plate/oven too long. The wine was excellent for house wine and very tasty.

The food and wine was, as always, excellent. I paid the bill in cash, however, and strangely an assumption was made that I wasn't expecting change on the amount I'd paid which included the tip in the bill (i.e. that I would be leaving a tip in excess one 13.5% tip on the bill). This may have been a misunderstanding but it was embarrassing having to ask for the change (and receipt) in front of my guest. Not a big thing but just something to be aware of. Sorry to make a moan.

The fd was I had 4 course Gascon evening. Certainly ex.value for London. My quibble is with the service. Whilst v.friendly&helpful,it was too quick. I had just finished my tasty pudding,&my empty plate was whisked away. I was still eating. When I arrived,a cupful of tasty cauliflower soup was on my table. By the way,was it meant to be lukewarm? I ordered the cheapest red wine. I regretted it. Not nice.

As usual the food was very good as was the service. Our only regret is that the battered squid has not appeared on the menu for some time now.
