Named as one of the best places to eat in the UK by Observer Food Monthly, The Coal Shed in Brighton is a gourmet steak and seafood restaurant with an emphasis on sourcing fresh, local ingredients. Further recommended by The Telegraph and The Guardian, the restaurant thrives thanks to its innovative takes on classic dishes – the coconut-flavoured curried monkfish is a prime example.

With a seasonal menu featuring prime cuts of beef and succulent seafood, The Coal Shed menu is a treasure trove of British delicacies. It’s difficult to go wrong with the 35 day, dry-aged Scottish steaks, which gain a subtle smokiness from the real charcoal grill, while those looking for the full seaside experience can try the Irish rock oysters, served on crushed ice with lemon wedges and tabasco.

Don’t let the name fool you, The Coal Shed restaurant in Brighton does feature a rustic interior, but it’s a far cry from a chilly outhouse. Instead, the wooden furnishings and exposed masonry evoke a cosy ambience, while the walls are adorned with a variety of artwork, adding a splash of colour to the décor.

Serving superb surf and turf cuisine, The Coal Shed is just a 10-minute walk from the famous Brighton Pier.

Food was great. They did forget our mains as 2 tables that were after us got their mains and we were still not served. The staff were attentive enough to realized that and checked on it for us and got things moving along. Food was very well done so no complains. Will visit again.

Had a great meal here's been "on the list" for a while, so as we were having a day in Brighton with no real plans or time constraints I booked a table before we set off this morning. Internet booking system was painless and whilst there wasn't any availability around lunchtime, we managed to get in at 6:00pm.
The whole experience was very pleasant, with a friendly welcome and immediate offer of water when we were seated. The menu isn't huge, but was clearly set out and descriptions weren't full of jargon or "chef-speak". The waiting staff were knowledgeable and understood the menu, and were able to advise us on appropriate quantities of meat (as we went for on of the steaks on offer), as well as offering tasters of the two wines we were considering (advice was spot on!). The starters (jacob's ladder BBQ rib and crispy squid with chili beef) were tasty and nicely presented. For the main we went for the 700g Porterhouse to share, with (beef dripping) chips & (freshly made) onion rings, and it was perfectly cooked and served sliced for ease of sharing. The chips and onion rings were a great accompaniment. The wine we went for was the Malbec, and it was perfect with the steak.
Too full for dessert, so just good coffee and a square of fudge to end.
It's not the cheapest place to visit, but the quality is excellent, the staff knowledgeable and the overall experience is one that makes you want to come back for more....we will definitely do so!

Wonderful! That's the first adjective that springs to mind when thinking about my lunch. My partner and I live in London and have been looking for a restaurant to love in Brighton for quite some time and then two come along at the same time: The Coal Shed and its sister restaurant The Salt Room. The first thing to say is that if you've got Sophie looking after you then you're going to have a great time at The Coal Shed. She's friendly, knowledgeable, totally professional and boy does she know her wines and cocktails! She's a great mixologist. that said, everyone who looked after us was super friendly and nice without over doing it. There was no need for any of the staff to pester us about whether the food was good because they KNEW it was good. I get so fed up with staff asking me whether I'm happy and enjoying the food. The crew at The Coal Shed chatted during the ordering of the meal, explained the menu where we needed it explained and then left us to enjoy ourselves: it was very refreshing. The standard of the food was excellent. Really wonderful. The menu was tight and nicely varied; the portion sizes were just right and the timing between each course was just right: not too rushed or slow. The wine list was very easy to understand the selection of wines was obviously compiled by a very good sommelier. Ambience. Well, we were the first to arrive for lunch and yet it didn't feel awkward. None of the staff hovered and we just got on with enjoying ourselves at our own speed over a couple of delicious cocktails. The restaurant soon filled up and made our experience even nicer with the buzz of other conversations filling the place. We had two cocktails; a bottle of really good wine; two starters; two mains, two deserts, two glasses of desert wine and two double espressos. The bill came to £138!! amazing value for money. We just loved the whole occasion and can't wait to return
