Restaurant description

Housed in the Chichester Festival Theatre, Minerva Bar & Grill serves modern British cuisine using seasonal, local produce. The Minerva Lounge and Brasserie offer drinks and light bites for pre and post-performance refreshment.

Start with Brighton blue cheese, fig, radicchio, and chicory salad with hazelnut dressing, or smoked mackerel mousse with horseradish crème fraiche and focaccia thins. Mains on the Minerva menu include slow-cooked shoulder of pork with mustard sauce, and Sussex beetroot tatin with goats’ cheese. Lighter options include a Mediterranean meze sharing platter, quiche of the day and a British cheese board.

Desserts at The Minerva Bar & Grill also feature local produce and include Sussex summer berry mess and steamed vanilla sponge with sticky bourbon sauce. Local beers and an extensive drinks list including English sparkling wine are also available.

Open to theatregoers and the general public alike, The Minerva at Chichester Festival Theatre is a short walk from the city centre and a 7-minute drive from Chichester Train Station.

Service great, friendly and efficient. Food overpriced due to quality. The starters were fine, however the mains were very disappointing, 2 of our party of 3 had the fish, the fish itself was fine if a little oily, the sides were not up to scratch, the Celeriac was not seasoned and consequently tasteless, the greens were overcooked with the same result, the pears were bizarre as they complimented nothing else on the plate. Our third party member had the Chicken which was fine but the gnocchi was a mixture of under and overcooked, either wet and soggy or dry and chalky, suggesting poor use of the microwave. In addition the coffee was served lukewarm.

Having dined at the restaurant many times, we were disappointed in the meal. I started with the veloute ( soup ) with an extra for bread . The soup was good but the small roll was stale. i noted that if I had ordered a nibble of bread the rolls were those pre-baked and obviously fresher. The insult was to be charged £1 for the stale roll. The main of the braised steak was very tender but the green vegetables had hardly hit the pan and not possible to be cut. Finally my wife had the special sponge pudding which was served cold - not enjoyable. On each occasion, having mentioned concerns to the waiter, the reply was " I will tell the chef". Really not acceptable.

Very open and airy feel. Friendly, helpful staff. Three courses, I enjoyed the beef, it was so tender. Only disappointment was the service charge is included and we prefer to add our own. Look at menu before if considering taking children, limited choice.

Convenient and good choice of food. Quite a noisy restaurant though, bit like a canteen.
