Perched on the picturesque Torquay coastline, Cary Arms is a charming rustic English countryside pub and hotel. Seconds from the beach, this gastropub serves a selection of luxurious dishes made with seasonal ingredients, with a focus on fresh seafood caught in the sparking blue waters right outside.
Gourmet British and European flavours feature on the Cary Arms menu, starting off with seafood delicacies like the half pint of shell-on prawns, served with tomato salsa and dill mayonnaise. Hearty home-style favourites include chicken, leek and mushroom pie with dauphinoise potatoes, seasonal vegetables and red wine jus, and succulent tastes from the grill can be found in the fillet of west country beef with onion rings, mushrooms, chips, bacon and peppercorn jus.
Luxurious desserts at Cary Arms in Torquay include treats such as lemon and thyme drizzle cake with lemon curd and clotted cream, as well as inventive creations like coconut cream pudding with mango and chilli salsa and passionfruit sorbet. There is a fine whisky selection with single malts from across Scotland, and a wine list filled with expertly selected vintages.
A stunning coastal setting for gourmet recipes, Cary Arms is housed in the same building as a luxury spa. Central Torquay is just a 9-minute drive away.

We sat in the POD private dining area and it was a lovely spot!! We ordered two goat's cheese salads and a salmon and crayfish salad - all of which were delicious!

My wife and I stayed at the Cary Arms for six nights and dined in the restaurant on five of them. We also had breakfast there each morning, several lunches and an afternoon tea. The food was good, particularly the fish main courses. The service was usually excellent - thanks especially to Jack, Tony and Anne Marie. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals at the Cary Arms.

Stunning location with beautiful coastal views (always a seal in the bay) a large terrace area and a well planted, colourful garden. Very friendly, efficient and attentive staff - just missed being welcomed when I first arrived. A bit dark but cosy inside with slightly old fashioned decor and furniture. A very relaxed, unpressurised atmosphere though, with a variety of table locations in intimate settings, all with superb views, and dog friendly. Varied vegan/vegetarian menu and good quality food - very tasty and well presented. Bit disappointed with difference in quantity though, depending on what you order. I had a red pepper stuffed with tomato and couscous and nothing else came with it - next time I would order extra side dishes. My friends ordered other meals that came with chips or potatoes, and veg or salad. Overall very enjoyable experience though and would definitely eat there again.

This is the first time in several visits to The Cary Arms that I have been disappointed. I felt that there was a poor choice of options on the menu on the day I visited. Partly this was because I had eaten fish on three occasions on the preceding four days, so felt that I didn’t want to choose the fish options. I’d also eaten risotto in that time, and I didn’t want to eat pasta. I was tempted by the Fillet of Beef, but it was a little expensive for me, so I chose a gourmet burger. I had hoped that there would be a pork dish on the menu. The burger was acceptable, but I could have made this at home. The fries were disappointing. Hand-cut, thicker chips would have been preferable.
The Sticky Toffee Pudding was disappointing: the sponge being chewy, and a little dry, rather than sticky and unctuous.
We had tea after lunch, and it was weak, unlike our previous visit when it was good. Expensive tea, for a poor experience.
This was sad, as my sister and I had eaten a good Sunday Lunch just a few days previously.

Dreary, lifeless food and service to match. £90 dinner for two without wine? Never again, I'm afraid. A lovely setting spoilt by an apparent arrogance, borne, probably, from a lack of viable options in the local area.
Serve up that standard in Manchester (or, God forbid, London) and be out of business in a fortnight.

We were in the conservatory part of the restaurant. Light and airy with impressive views of the sunset and sea. Food was delicious, service excellent, and gentle piano (live) music in the background. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are friendly and very professional. Could not have asked for more.
