Perched on the picturesque Torquay coastline, Cary Arms is a charming rustic English countryside pub and hotel. Seconds from the beach, this gastropub serves a selection of luxurious dishes made with seasonal ingredients, with a focus on fresh seafood caught in the sparking blue waters right outside.

Gourmet British and European flavours feature on the Cary Arms menu, starting off with seafood delicacies like the half pint of shell-on prawns, served with tomato salsa and dill mayonnaise. Hearty home-style favourites include chicken, leek and mushroom pie with dauphinoise potatoes, seasonal vegetables and red wine jus, and succulent tastes from the grill can be found in the fillet of west country beef with onion rings, mushrooms, chips, bacon and peppercorn jus.

Luxurious desserts at Cary Arms in Torquay include treats such as lemon and thyme drizzle cake with lemon curd and clotted cream, as well as inventive creations like coconut cream pudding with mango and chilli salsa and passionfruit sorbet. There is a fine whisky selection with single malts from across Scotland, and a wine list filled with expertly selected vintages.

A stunning coastal setting for gourmet recipes, Cary Arms is housed in the same building as a luxury spa. Central Torquay is just a 9-minute drive away.

Excellent food in a wonderful location. Best not to drive as the access road is very poor.

The Cary Arms is a stunning venue to be in and look out of. The setting is fantastic and the ambiance is warm and welcoming. Be warned the road down is very steep and in summer the pay and display parking may well be limited. The pub had live music when we were there for Sunday lunch, and was very enjoyable. The roast lunch was par for general pubs, although I was expecting something of higher quality.

Lovely gastropub, food was lovely, I had a specials board monkfish which, although lovely, there could have been more fish ratio to the rest of the food on the plate.

Overall if I am honest I was disappointed, the setting was fantastic, but the food was average good pub grub, not the experience I expected. The staff were great but could really do with being supported with some training. Knowledge of the menu and certainly wines was very limited and when I mentioned I was allergic to wheat and asked for some bread to go with my starter I was delivered a slice of untoasted bread which was simply horrible. In the gents toilets the ceiling was missing in a large area over the toilet. Loved the outside fire etc but I at the end of the day I spent over £600 on four of us for dinner including tip and left being disappointed.

I have followed Peter De Savary for many years and always admired his attention to detail and the quality of his operations and cannot help feeling this is not what he would expect to be delivering

Booked for a birthday treat, we were not disappointed. The restaurant was lovely with amazing views. The fish dishes were excellent and the service was top class.

The food, drinks and setting were very nice but very expensive. We couldn’t find a server to pay for nearly 10 minutes so went up to the bar to pay.
