Excellent food and friendly service

Perched on the picturesque Torquay coastline, Cary Arms is a charming rustic English countryside pub and hotel. Seconds from the beach, this gastropub serves a selection of luxurious dishes made with seasonal ingredients, with a focus on fresh seafood caught in the sparking blue waters right outside.
Gourmet British and European flavours feature on the Cary Arms menu, starting off with seafood delicacies like the half pint of shell-on prawns, served with tomato salsa and dill mayonnaise. Hearty home-style favourites include chicken, leek and mushroom pie with dauphinoise potatoes, seasonal vegetables and red wine jus, and succulent tastes from the grill can be found in the fillet of west country beef with onion rings, mushrooms, chips, bacon and peppercorn jus.
Luxurious desserts at Cary Arms in Torquay include treats such as lemon and thyme drizzle cake with lemon curd and clotted cream, as well as inventive creations like coconut cream pudding with mango and chilli salsa and passionfruit sorbet. There is a fine whisky selection with single malts from across Scotland, and a wine list filled with expertly selected vintages.
A stunning coastal setting for gourmet recipes, Cary Arms is housed in the same building as a luxury spa. Central Torquay is just a 9-minute drive away.

We booked a table for two during a short break in Torquay. The Cary Arms is not easy to get to but the meal made it well worth the visit. There was plenty of choice on the menu and would suit all tastes. The food was excellent and was well presented and the service was polite and prompt. Unfortunately we were visiting in winter and so we could not benefit from the views which would have been lovely! Will definitely return.

Great view. Sunday lunch was very enjoyable with excellent live acoustic music. Local pint was very good. Service was excellent. Very steep hill access. Parking available in adjacent local authority car park. Very busy on summer so book a table. Recommend a visit as nearby beaches to walk after lunch.

Your booking on line is great as i couldnt get through by phone, and you kindly called me back to confirm a window seat. Can i PLEASE make a request,i have visited The Cary Arms more times than i can remember ,with office parties, client lunches and of course my friends and everyone complains about the uncomfortable and mean wooden seats in the restaurant,we were so jammed in on last Friday i had to get out first to allow my friends to extract themselves from the window alcove. I love The Cary Arms and your staff AND the great food but please please improve the 1970s seating and tables!!

Red wine Jus does NOT go with Chicken and Leek Pie! Otherwise the food was great.

Quite simply, the best short break I have ever enjoyed. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, every member of staff at the Cary Arms took great pains to ensure that we had a memorable stay. The staff clearly seem to enjoy their work, and their warmth and enthusiasm infected my wife and I and our fellow guests. The hotel is beautiful, and located in a glorious setting. Our room was perfect, as were our meals. We will certainly return next year. Magical.

I had chicken and mushroom pie. Delicious, but best of all were there the greens with gravy. Yum!

Not what we expected as reviews were really good. Starters were good although the scallops were slightly overcooked. The risotto had too much butter in it, it was extremely sickly and I couldn't finish it which was a shame. The dessert of a chocolate brownie was just a mushy lump of chocolate but tasted good.
The setting itself is very beautiful.
What we found quite unsettling was the fact that the restaurant staff started packing the whole restaurant up once they had closed the kitchen, we felt like we were being rushed out of there and the waiting staff completely forgot about us. They were too busy chatting amongst themselves and seemingly too busy trying to clear up and leave than to look after us. It was quite a disappointing experience as we were very much looking forward to eating here and were planning on staying at the beach huts next time we were in Devon but have decided against this. It is a shame the service let us down at the end of the meal.
