Weaving together old-school charm and trendy design, the Canteen Spitalfields in central London boasts fresh British food in an inviting glass structure, with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

The popular bar at Canteen – Spitalfields offers a meticulously-compiled wine list, innovative Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Baked in-house, the cakes in the afternoon tea are augmented by homely sandwiches, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas.

Nestled amongst the business and liveliness of Bishopsgate, the Canteen – Spitalfields is just a 7-minute walk from Aldgate East Train Station.

The service was superb, the waitress was so friendly and efficient. She was smiley and genuine. Her professional service was very much appreciated. The food was excellent, well cooked and presented. The coffee was strong and tasty.

Worth every penny. I would certainly recommend you having a meal here.

Unfortunately one of the worst experiences in a while. We had two people serving our table and after ordering once some of the stuff came although she confirmed that we wished everything to come at the same time. Fine we assumed the rest would come later but when one hour had passed from the first food to what we were still waiting for not coming we asked and they said it hadn't been registered although she wrote it down in her notebook with the rest of the things. Juices came after we had finish eating. Coffee came without milk, second coffee came with hot milk and not cold as asked. Table was dirty and one dish had a piece of eggshell in it plus the avocado was brown and had weird strings in it. We just laughed about it since EVERYTHING went wrong. Even 3 dishes that should have been the same came looking different some with chili and others without. And when paying they had added an item more expensive than what we actually had. Not recommend sorry train your staff.

Very disappointing dining experience. Staff were disengaged, inattentive and not familiar with the menu. Food was very poor. I ordered the fish of the day (plaice) and for £13.50 with no sides received a very bony, watery, poor quality and poorly cooked piece of fish - probably the worst I have had anywhere, let alone at a medium-priced restaurant that supposedly focuses on quality ingredients. My companion had mediocre sausage and mash with watery and underseasoned gravy. The restaurant was not busy at all so no excuses. The drinks list is good but overpriced. We decided to cut our losses and have dessert elsewhere. At this price point there is a lot of very good food in London. I won't be going back to Canteen and would not recommend it to anyone. Wouldn't be surprised if something else takes it place at Spitalfields in the coming months.

BEEN SEVERAL TIMES TO MEET UP WITH EX-COLLEAGUES FROM CITY. GREAT LOCATION AND ATMOSPHERE

A generally good experience, a shame in some ways that there didn't seem to be that many people using the restaurant.

I was working in London for a few days and went out with 3 colleagues to the restaurant. We all enjoyed the food and drinks, especially the freshly squeezed Orange Juice and everyone agreed that the portion size and prices were spot on.

The only niggle was that the servers, despite the relative lack of diners, weren't on the ball so in the end two of the party decided they wouldn't have the sweet that they had originally planned to. They were OK with it but if this happens regularly the restaurant would lose valuable revenue.

Good service, but disappointed by the food

If you are planning on having a Sunday roast dinner here...... DON'T! My partner ordered a roast beef dinner which had clearly been re-heated. The roast beef was in fact a very cheap cut of frying beef which was overcooked and could not be cut into (even with a steak knife). The 'duck fat' roast potatoes were so rock hard that it was impossible to cut into them. I would have rather had a roast at a Weatherspoons.

The only postitive was the serving staff who extremely helpful and very attentative.
