Very nice! Ambience was pleasant - particularly as the name 'The Canteen' conjured up school meals.... good service, good food, nice environment. Reasonable price - would definitely go again/recommend to others

Trendy, yet with retro charm, the Canteen Royal Festival Hall showcases great British cuisine. Boasting this vintage food in a sleek setting, you can relax and refresh yourself in the well-heeled and iconic South Bank.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

An ever-bustling bar at Canteen – Royal Festival Hall offers fine wines, inventive Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Homemade cakes, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas populate the afternoon tea, indicative of all the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant.

Located by the riverside in the landmark Royal Festival Hall, the Canteen is perfectly placed to further explore central London, and is just a 3-minute walk from Waterloo Train Station.

Canteen offers somewhat up-market comfort food, and is an effective way to get a sit-down meal in a comfortable environment where you can hear each other talk before you go to a show. Is it great dining? Probably not. But would you go to a place called "Canteen" for fine dining?

I visited Canteen for lunch with a friend. We both enjoyed our visit very much. The staff were helpful and friendly - and the food was delicious and reasonably priced.

I really enjoyed dinner at Canteen. The food was fresh and tasty. The staff were friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was lovely. I would go back again.

Useful venue for all S Bank attractions. Had early dinner and not too crowded. When full, guess it would be hard to hear your fellow diner so don't choose for intimate date.
Menu selection fairly average. Salmon salad followed by v sweet and filling lemon posset did the job.
Waiting staff attentive but not too pushy and allowed us time to linger.
Price what you would expect for the area.

Relaxed atmosphere, fast and friendly service and excellent food at a reasonable price - highly recommended for a pre-theatre meal

This was a first class experience. We booked the afternoon tea option for a group of 5 . Some of our group was delayed by the staff were fantastic in accommodating that. They made an excellent suggestion for snacks to eat prior to the arrival of the rest of the group. The afternoon tea was so plentiful with high quality sandwich was, home made scones and generous portions of Victoria sandwich. There was more than could be eaten. Our American guest was most impressed! We could hardly believe the great value of the offer £12 per head. This is an experience we will definitely be repeating!
