Relaxed but attentive service. The food was excellent, the menu is slightly limited, but always delivers.

Trendy, yet with retro charm, the Canteen Royal Festival Hall showcases great British cuisine. Boasting this vintage food in a sleek setting, you can relax and refresh yourself in the well-heeled and iconic South Bank.

Keeping to time-honoured traditions, the Canteen menu offers a range of wholesome, no-nonsense classics. Daily pies and seasonal sausages are on offer, as well as favourites like macaroni cheese or battered fish and chips. Puddings are similarly indulgent and old school, with offerings like apple pie and custard, or gingerbread with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

An ever-bustling bar at Canteen – Royal Festival Hall offers fine wines, inventive Cockney-themed cocktails and locally-brewed ciders and beers. Homemade cakes, hand-roasted coffees and rare teas populate the afternoon tea, indicative of all the fresh ingredients used at the restaurant.

Located by the riverside in the landmark Royal Festival Hall, the Canteen is perfectly placed to further explore central London, and is just a 3-minute walk from Waterloo Train Station.

We liked the home cooking aspect of the menu and the quality of the pies was excellent.

I love the vibe and the location. But on this occasion, three of us had roast beef, and the meat was exceptionally sinewy, fatty and indigestable. We left more of it than we ate. It's a huge shame as we love coming to this restaurant. The roast potatoes were very greasy, less potato more of a chip. We've had excellent food here before, so I hope it's a one-off, as I do want to return. But it was very disappointing.

We've visited Canteen a number of times - almost always before an event somewhere on the Southbank. The service is consistently good - cheerful, informative and efficient. The food is so-so - not the place you go to for a foodie night out, but perfectly fine for a quick bite before a show.

The food was fresh and simply cooked, perfectly wonderful and not messed around with! The waiter was friendly and courteous and service excellent. The level of the background music was just right...enough to create a gentle mood, not too loud so you cannot hear eachother....this is SO important and will make me not return to a restaurant if it's wrong.
We will totally be back. Thank you, you get five stars all round from our party!

This place is in a nice spot on the Southbank and accessible for prams which is why I chose the restaurant for my friends. However, it seems because of the location, they don't put much effort in. I ordered a mushroom risotto which was one of the lighter options. At £15, it was a small potion and was cold by the time it arrived. I then ordered a cappuccino which arrived lukewarm not looking like a cappuccino. The waiters were nonchalant and not particularly friendly.
This was dissapointing as I'd been before and thought the food was good. There are so many good places in and around the Southbank - I'd recommend trying somewhere else based on this experience.

Lovely restaurant space but the dullest food.

Excellent food and service at a reasonable price for London. The spicy mutton pie was delicious.

We took the grandchildren for lunch before a show. We all enjoyed it
