Restaurant description

In the walled city of York, Café Rouge serves French cuisine within a glorious building featuring glass frontage and a vibrant red colour scheme. York Minister is just around the corner from Café Rouge.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Café Rouge – York allows diners to take in the atmosphere of York's side streets with al fresco dining, whist enjoying an affordable French dish.

Dishes displayed on a la carte menus are representative of the type of food available at the restaurant.

We were very disappointed with the experience. Our starter was not very hot and when our main course arrived we had to call the waiter back to tell him the food was cold. It was served on cold plates which didn't help either. We said we wanted replacements but when it came back it was the same dish re-heated. And still not as hot as we would have liked. The waiter was full of apologies but no effort was made to compensate for our disappointment.

Terrible experience. We had to wait for long time to order then they told us did not have many items available! Poor poor poor.

Excellent professional service from all staff, especially a young man who may have been head waiter as he was in the salon/bar. We were all impressed that he didn't use a pad/pen to write down our order and also remembered who ordered each dish. We all ate differently and enjoyed our dishes - no complaints about anything. Of particular note we're the champignons, the boulabaise and the confit du canard. I enjoyed the creaminess of the salmon rillette so much, I wish I could have it for mains too! Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant, made better by the attentive staff. One could easily forget that this particular restaurant is part of a chain!

We had a lovely table in the window. Love the sharing platter. Shame various things were not available including dauphinois potatoes. My duck did not have a crispy skin, it was sent back for over ten minutes and returned no better. However, the manager gave a generous discount for this, and the duck meat was succulent and the cherry sauce delicious.

Disappointing. Very slow service and the new tagine, whilst tasty, was a very small portion.
