Lovely afternoon tea
26 August 2018
In the walled city of York, Café Rouge serves French cuisine within a glorious building featuring glass frontage and a vibrant red colour scheme. York Minister is just around the corner from Café Rouge.
As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.
In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.
Café Rouge – York allows diners to take in the atmosphere of York's side streets with al fresco dining, whist enjoying an affordable French dish.

Poor service. Grumpy waitress on arrival. Redeemed slightly by friendly waiter. Food delivered to wrong table and wasn't very hot. Last visit to Cafe Rouge for me. At least the price was reasonable and the starter was tasty.

No greeting when entered restaurant just a rude “don’t stand there, a manager will be here soon”! Moules were powdery and served with no bread, chips soggy. Steak was ok, but no garnish at all! Couldn’t do a Croque salmon instead of ham? Wouldn’t go again.

It was awful service. Over an hour until the food arrived! They had forgotten about us.

We had afternoon tea which happens to have been the best afternoon tea we’ve had everything was fresh the staff were very helpful. The only downside we got our coffee when we ordered so when the afternoon tea arrived we had to order more coffee

We booked to eat here after passing earlier in the day & having a look at the menu. It is a lovely restaurant in a great location. - Just round the corner from York Minster. We were given a table near the window, which was nice to be able to watch the world go by. The food was excellent! I had the beef stroganoff & it was gorgeous. - I highly recommend it. My partner had the steak which he enjoyed. We also stayed for desert which was equally as nice. The staff were lovely & friendly, taking time to ask us about our break & what we thought of York.
All in all it was a really good evening with good quality, tastey food.

Was a little disappointed to be honest; the staff were lovely & friendly
The food was just 'OK'; we were booked for 6pm and there were some dishes already off the menu, both soups, garlic bread, salmon & the bouillabaisse (as the restaurant was fully booked all night, one took it that the same applied throughout the day)
Don't get me wrong when I say the food was 'OK', it was quite tasty but it was the basic things like, checking the cutlery isn't dirty, whoever cooked the chicken may have forgotten it was cooking and had burnt (I'm all for crispy but on my breast) the edge of the plates were very greasy, nothing that a wipe round wouldn't have gone amiss. I noticed the lady next me had the same dish and had left quite a lot of burnt chicken too. I had more sauce, which was a bonus as that was tasty
Basic stuff really but as I said earlier, the taste was there and appreciate the volume of customers that will have been; however, its a busy restaurant and these are standard things really
Not sure I would recommend, but would maybe say go and try, but not as a recommendation, after all, each to their own!
