Restaurant description

In the walled city of York, Café Rouge serves French cuisine within a glorious building featuring glass frontage and a vibrant red colour scheme. York Minister is just around the corner from Café Rouge.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Café Rouge – York allows diners to take in the atmosphere of York's side streets with al fresco dining, whist enjoying an affordable French dish.

Dishes displayed on a la carte menus are representative of the type of food available at the restaurant.

Service was good, starters carrot and shallot tartin was very nice, mussels (were plenty) but only small amount of sauce and were very salty ( wouldn’t recommend ) and was disappointed. Creme brûlée was very good.

We have eaten here on several occasions, and enjoyed it. We did enjoy our food ,but the service was just too slow. It took 3.15 hrs to dine. The food was delicious,as always. I think the food may have been waiting for waitresses ,it arrived just hot enough to be acceptable. Friendly helpful waitresses and manager. Beautiful restaurant,in a beautiful city.

Food was great, with a short wait time too. The restaurant is nice as well but we had a few problems. One of the chairs was broken but they swapped it for a newer one which was good. The table was wobbly and the poor staff looked incredibly stressed out. Maybe there were just a lot of people dining that night. Overall was a good restaurant though and I would go again.

We waited for at least 15 minutes before being asked what drink we wanted. By the time we received our afternoon tea we had finished our drinks. Bearing in mind we had pre-booked so they knew what time it should have been ready for and i had a pot of tea which was finished before the meal came. When they bought the afternoon tea we asked for extra tea and coffee which never arrived so we had our meal without drinks. Nobody came to see if everything was ok, so when we had finished we stood at the bar to leave and eventually someone came to see us.

Excellent food and service. We couldn't have asked for better especially on Christmas Day.

No greeting when entered restaurant just a rude “don’t stand there, a manager will be here soon”! Moules were powdery and served with no bread, chips soggy. Steak was ok, but no garnish at all! Couldn’t do a Croque salmon instead of ham? Wouldn’t go again.

Poor service. Grumpy waitress on arrival. Redeemed slightly by friendly waiter. Food delivered to wrong table and wasn't very hot. Last visit to Cafe Rouge for me. At least the price was reasonable and the starter was tasty.
