Restaurant description

A stone's throw from both the Lyceum and Aldwych theatres, Café Rouge Wellington Street serves authentic French food in a prime London location.

Part of the UK-wide group of Café Rouge restaurants, a range of traditional French dishes such as steak frites, confit duck and beef bourgignon are on offer. Amongst the tempting lighter bites, try a tasty croque monsieur, breaded camembert with cranberry and redcurrant sauce, or a classic caesar salad. A good selection of French wines, many from lesser known producers, is on hand to accompany the dishes.

Breakfast at Café Rouge is also a classically French affair. Offering croissants, pain au chocolat and baguettes, as well as hot chocolate, tea and an array of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

A popular choice for pre or post-theatre dining, Covent Garden Café Rouge also boasts outdoor seating which provides the perfect spot to watch the world go by.

Dishes displayed on a la carte menus are representative of the type of food available at the restaurant.

The food was good - I had a croque Madame and my partner had a burger. Our service could have been better. The staff weren’t very attentive and they kept forgetting drinks etc. As they were hosting a Christmas party, it was also very loud which wasn’t the nicest atmosphere for our meal.

Service was poor. They seemed very stressed and rushed despite the fact it was early on a Tuesday evening. Doubt they can cope well with a Saturday night. The choice I requested was unavailable - which meant I had few other options (being vegetarian).

Restaurant was busy as one would expect for a Covent Garden restaurant but to have run out of cheeseboard by 6.00pm was not good. How many other diners were disappointed by the time they closed? The staff were welcoming and efficient and the service was good and up to the usual Café Rouge standard.

Very busy as Trump demo had just ended. Food was disappointing but we just needed a pre theatre refuel. I had booked a special Bookatable deal which never materialised and we ended up choosing from the main menu. The tuna was over cooked to the point of being beyond chewy but the salad was nice as was the steak and chips. It was fast food on the run and fine under the circumstances. Nice staff.

I waited 20mins between my starter and the main course, apparently the waitress forgot about my dinner. When I questioned her why the table after me already had their steak but I'm still waiting, she brought up a plate for me. I ordered steak with salad but she gave me steak with chips, I told her it's not my order, the funny thing is, she then said, you can try this and I will bring you salad. Totally mess. Food is average.

Started off with the crab tion which was very tasty with two sourdough slices. Continued with the beef bourgogne an old Cafe Rouge favourite. This was much better than in some Cafe restaurants. The beef melted in the mouth the sauce was exceptionally good. Mashed potatoes nice and light went very well with the rest. No room for dessert.
