Restaurant description

A stone's throw from both the Lyceum and Aldwych theatres, Café Rouge Wellington Street serves authentic French food in a prime London location.

Part of the UK-wide group of Café Rouge restaurants, a range of traditional French dishes such as steak frites, confit duck and beef bourgignon are on offer. Amongst the tempting lighter bites, try a tasty croque monsieur, breaded camembert with cranberry and redcurrant sauce, or a classic caesar salad. A good selection of French wines, many from lesser known producers, is on hand to accompany the dishes.

Breakfast at Café Rouge is also a classically French affair. Offering croissants, pain au chocolat and baguettes, as well as hot chocolate, tea and an array of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

A popular choice for pre or post-theatre dining, Covent Garden Café Rouge also boasts outdoor seating which provides the perfect spot to watch the world go by.

Dishes displayed on a la carte menus are representative of the type of food available at the restaurant.

They have clearly tried to cram as many tables in as possible. Tables which are far too small anyhow. Thus, you are able to hear the conversations from every adjoining table. You are also worrying if you are going to elbow people whilst eating...... spoils the occasion.

Dined at around 8pm on a Friday evening. The food was good; the assiette campagnarde was good.

Very easy and relaxed environment. The staff were extremely friendly and I felt 'taken care of' as soon as I walked in the door. I asked if I could ammend my meal choice slightly (swapping a side dish for another) and this was not a problem. Amazing bang for your buck if you have a 2 for 1! I have been numerous times now and have no complaints. Will return for sure.

We dined at 6 pm which proved to be very busy and noisy but luckily we had reserved a table through bookatable. The staff were pleasant and obliging and couldn't be faulted. However, there was a hiccup over the dessert which should have been 3 different types of creme brulee but turned out to be all the same. We were however offered free coffees to compensate.

Dined with a business connection whom I hadn't met previously - therefore not a romantic occasion, but if one was looking for a low-budget, romantic location then this venue would fit the bill. Particularly good value as had two-for-one discounted voucher. I always enjoy the menu and standard of food at Cafe Rouge branches.
