The waitress was charming ,the food was very good and my only gripe is again why do cafe rouge still supply little bits of tissue instead of decent napkins ?

In a picturesque English building, Café Rouge Tenterden serves tasty French dishes. Café Rouge has cosy English charm, with original beams and a brick fireplace in the centre of the dining room.
As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.
In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.
Café Rouge is a 5-minute walk from Kent and East Sussex Light Railway.

The service was not what I expected as this was a treat for me and my husband over Christmas.

Had the spring set menu, 2 courses for £11.50. Reasonable amount of choices. I had the pork rilette, boeuf parmentier and for an additional £3.50 was tempted to the chocolate torte. All dishes were very tasty. The restaurant is lovely in an old building with beams and has a lovely atmosphere. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our waiter was French. Would find here again.

Restaurant decor and service pleasant but food was terrible. Unusual for cafe rouge but I imagine there is regional variation. Several of our choices were unavailable, the starters were fine but main courses not good... the Bouillabaisse and Duck. No proper veg which was overcooked, strong tasting fish, no dauphinoise potatoes, just a few boiled and cut up. We thought poor value as food poor quality. It was a Monday night so we assumed the restaurant had not had a fresh delivery of food after the weekend. Very disappointing

I feel terrible for not knowing the waitress' name as she finished her shift before we got the bill. She was brilliant, really friendly and attentive, helped make our mother day meal special. The food was great value for money. Thank you

A mixed experience on this visit:
The waitress who greeted us promptly walked away to check our reservation and never returned (a new staff member perhaps who didn't know what to do?) and another member of staff took us to our table (we had made a reservation online).
We had to request the menus.
The "medium" steak was well done - this was replaced by a new steak but that meant that we were not eating as a group.
We had to remind the waiter for the coffee.
Apart from the initial waitress the staff were very friendly. -

We were impressed with the layout and how clean the restaurant was inside. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome and the service was good throughout our lunch. Whilst I am sure it was beautiful when flowering the old orchid without flowers on the window sill looked a bit naff so personally I would have thrown that away or put it from public sight if Café Rouge think it will shoot flowers again in the future. The food was fine, overpriced in my opinion. The steak was nothing to write home about. A little undercooked for medium and it had not been seasoned. I had the Merlot wine which was pretty average too. I was disappointed that they could not do a cheese board for one as I love cheese but my wife is not a fan and the deal we had stipulated cheeseboard for two although all the other desserts could be order singularly so I don't know what the rationale was for having to share the cheese board. It was hardly a big thing asking for just one serving. The waiter (Michael) did ask his supervisor but clearly, she decided it was a non. I ended up having the rum baba which appeared fresh from the microwave rolling round a large dinner plate. Overall it was a nice lunch and I have certainly had worse.

Alarm bells rang when we were greeted by " I haven't looked at the web bookings". No problem as my parents had found a table. From then on the service was appalling. Every time we wanted anything we had to go tontge bar area. The waitress was conspicuous by her absence all through the meal. In the end it took them well over 2 hours to produce 4 meals, very poor indeed. When the issue was raised we were told that 2 waitresses were training. On a Saturday? Someone is not using their common sense.
The meal itself was up to Cafè Rouge's normal high standard, the problem was delivery. I am not normally given to posting negative reviews, maybe they were having a bad day, nevertheless we were very disappointed. Sorry but you people need to raise your game. Check out Canterbury branch, they know how to run a busy restaurant
