Evening family meal. Yummy food and wine.
24 February 2013
With a combination of delicious food, great wines and a real ambience, Café Rouge has embodied the style and je ne sais quoi of French dining since it opened way back in 1989.
Now with over 90 sites across the country it's just the place to mull over the morning papers with a cafe au lait and a croissant, pop in for a spot of lunch, share a post-work drink or relax over an evening meal.
The menu covers a range of French classics from croques and baguettes, ideal for a quick and easy snack, to more substantial fare such as steak frites and boeuf bourguignon. Likewise, the wines are predominately French; many made by lesser known producers, and provide the perfect accompaniment to the food on offer.
No hassle, no rush, no skinny- decaff-double-shot-to-go, just a vibrant atmosphere that moves with your moods throughout the day.

Dined for 2 at around 8pm on a Thursday night. Took 45 minutes for main course to arrive although we only counted 8 other people in the restaurant, with 3 servers. Servers were rude, didn't seem concerned about service, more about cleaning up to go home early. Food itself was acceptable, not the worst I've ever had, but not worth the wait.

Previously visited as a couple for evening meal on a Friday @ 1930. Service and food was of a satisfactory standard but didn't match the price we paid. It wasn't ever so busy and service was timed pretty well. On this occasion the cheese platter was off the menu due to the kitchen running out along with 2 other dessert choices...... However we decided to take 2 friends for an evening meal on a Saturday, table booked @ 2000 and from the off the service was poor. This seemed to be due to lack of staff and the fact the restaurant was busier than before. You would think extra staff would be employed on a Saturday evening? No explanations or apologies for delays were given, even placing a drinks order was due to our request and not from the waiting staff approaching our table. Starters arrived 45 mins or more from after we placed our food order and when the main meals arrived they weren't very hot and 2 out of the 3 steaks ordered where over cooked and not as we had asked. This was brought to the waitress's attention and another was offered but we knew from the previous wait we could be there for some time! AGAIN no cheese platter and 2 other dessert choices were unavailable from the kitchen, surprising for a Saturday night evening service and obviously the kitchen staff haven't learnt from previous mistakes. Overall our dining experience has been disappointing, front of house staff appeared to be disorganised but remained friendly and quality of food was poor and over priced for the standard of which it was cooked and served. I wouldn't return or recommend unless service was greatly improved!

Dined before Theatre booking. Great food and attentive and excellent service. Willingness to adapt the selected menu choice to suit dietary low fat requirements, makes this venue our preferred choice when visiting Plymouth. Single small groan, air conditioning does produce rather cold chilly blasts from time to time, otherwise a very pleasant experience

As always a great meal and top service from enthusiastic staff. Atmosphere was convivial and a perfect start to a sunday afternoon. Only tiny gripe is that escargot has been removed from the starters. bring back the snails please as that surely is a backbone of the french cuisine experience.

A busy but efficient restaurant with staff who clearly got on with each other, respected their customers and enjoyed their work. Had dinner on a busy Saturday evening. Food was prompt, hot and as exactly as described in the menu. Wines were good.
