On the 9th level of the Birmingham Mailbox, Café Rouge offers an authentic French menu. Café Rouge offers views of the waterways from the al fresco dining area, whilst there is a friendly buzz inside.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

A 10-minute walk from Birmingham New Street Train Station, Café Rouge – Mailbox offers a relaxed venue for French dining.

    The atmosphere was nice and not too busy for a Sunday but the service was incredibly slow. One member of my group had the tuna nicoise which was incredibly over-done and tough but refused to send it back as they were so hungry by the time that we were served. The boulabaisse was nice but for the price was not substantial at all and no butter even offered for the bread

    The food was brilliant but we had issues with the service....
    The main came out before the starter
    There was an item missing from the sharing board that we weren't advised of and had to ask ourselves to be told they had "ran out"
    The garlic bread was inedible and hard
    When we mentioned the issues we were just given the bill

    We were entertaining an elderly mother with walking difficulties and thanks to nearby parking and lifts, it was better than anticipated. We got a warm welcome in the restaurant which is in a lovely setting above the canal. Unfortunately, our table did not have a canal view. We ordered drinks which were good, including a free prosecco that day. The crab & avocado tian was very nice - the toast was a little hard though. The prawns in garlic oil were overcooked according to my husband. The mains - hake & chips, duck confit and poulet Breton were OK. We had a little problem with the desserts as the tarte au pomme was extremely disappointing. This is my husband's favourite dish and it came as a flat disc of pastry with some apples arranged above with a ball of ice cream placed on top. If there was one quarter of an apple in the whole dish, that was all and it cost £5.95. The ice creams and sorbets were passable but, again, a bit over the top and some flavours were not available. We do realise that Mothers' Day puts a whole lot of pressure on all restaurants and getting meals out in optimum condition under that pressure is not easy but, as customers, we are paying a lot of money for that meal and we expect not just good service (which is what we got) but also good food which is value for money.
    We were fortunate that we had Tesco vouchers to pay for half of the food bill. We would have been very unhappy to pay the whole bill ourselves. We have previously eaten at Café Rouge in Solihull and London and we have had superb food and service but not on Mothers' Day.

    We have dine before in Café Rouge. We always come out satisfied with the great service and the tasty food. As a couple, this place it's pretty romantic and always provides us a nice memory.
