In Edinburgh city centre, Café Rouge is housed in a grand building and offers a charming French dining experience. There is a popular outside seating area for al fresco dining.
As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.
In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Princess Street Gardens are within easy reach of Café Rouge in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Rail Station is a 12-minute walk away.

Was given a gift card to be used at several restaurants and we chose Cafe Rouge after looking at their menu. The food we had was excellent, I had the mushrooms to start which were delicious and just the right size, and the beef burger to follow. It was cooked perfectly and was a taste sensation. My partner enjoyed his prawns to start with and the steak was melt in the mouth.
Also good to see mocktails on menu as I was driving later that evening. -

Afternoon Tea. Enjoyed the pieces of croque monsieur instead of sandwiches. One fresh scone each with clotted cream and jam. Chocolate mousse each in a little dish. Four large cakes which we halved. Just enough to eat not too much. Reasonable price. Good service and nice ambiance. Enjoyed the experience.

We chose to dine here because we’ve been here before several times in the past. It’s a lovely restaurant, very atmospheric, cheap and very cheerful. My sister and I were very pleased to have a window seat as requested and to be seated in the corner away from the other diners and children was brilliant!!! The set menu which we booked, sadly was disappointing as our very nice waiter told us that there was a problem with the delivery of food and a problem with the kitchen ... therefore, there were only a few choices to choose from. However, what we chose and a bottle of rose to match was outstanding. There was no rush for us to vacate the table which made it more relaxing for us to enjoy after a busy day.

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! The food was very poor, we had to return our mains to the kitchen(at this point I even apologised to the waitress, saying that I knew it was not her fault and that I was very sorry but we could not eat these meals) . The replacements were not much better and our waitress became bad tempered and sullen, practically throwing our bank card on the table after we paid. No apologies were made for us having to return food to the kitchen and although the manageress was in the restaurant she did not approach us, she made no effort to apologise to us and merely avoided our general area. We will never use this restaurant again.

Great french onion soup. Ordered the rib eye steak but the steak that arrived looked more like sirloin. It was cooked as ordered but I would have liked a real juicy ribeye. The house red was not available but a substitute was provided.
