Serving brasserie food in the centre of town, Café Rouge in Cheltenham replicates the unhurried style of a French bistro. Ornate chandeliers and antique-style lamps lend light to the cosy dining room and bar, while the outside terrace is the perfect place to watch the world go by as you dine.
As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as deep-fried camembert, baguettes, steak frites and mussels. There are also lighter dishes if you don't have much time to spare. The set menus for lunch and dinner (on certain days) are excellent value for money. There is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.
In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.
Chocolate ganache or apple tarte tatin make indulgent desserts, while a great range of children’s options is sure to please younger diners. Café Rouge Cheltenham is open early until late, centrally located on The Promenade.

The menu was really good but we were a bit disappointed that the restaurant was out of mussels. The food was all very nice and extremely reasonable on the set menu which we ordered from. The toilets were ridiculously far from the restaurant and poorly signposted; in the ladies' the hand soap/moisturiser had run out. Service was a bit patchy and slow at times, and staff were talking quite loudly about the tip we had left as we went out, which doesn't seem very discreet. In all it was a nice meal and we would certainly return, but a few easy wins in terms of service and little things would make it better.

Not great. Staff actually said Prosecco & Champagne are the same.

Having visited many Café Rouge restaurants, I have to say we were disappointed with the food and service. To start the staff were very attentive, however we were looking forward to a desert but no one came back to ask if we'd like one. The food was not great quality, I ordered duck which was very dry, the orange sauce was bland and the food only warm.

The mussels on the main menu were unavailable. Bizarrely, pork on the special menu was available, but not if one tried to order it as a main course from the standard menu. Eton Mess was delicious.
