Chelmsford Café Rouge serves delicious bistro-style French cuisine in a warm and inviting atmosphere. There is also an outside seating area and Chelmsford Rail Station is a 9-minute walk away.
As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.
In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.
Close to the town centre, Café Rouge is within a 10-minute walk of Chelmsford Central Park.

I was not impressed with Cafe Rouge and won’t be returning again. Compared with 5 years ago the portions are now smaller and expensive for what you receive. Items have been removed from the menu (like dolpinaise potatoes, salmon fish cakes). The house glass of wine was £8.25!!! The beer battered fish was a frozen fillet you chuck in the oven definitely not cooked fresh with bubbly beer batter. Something I could have cooked from the freezer at home. The service was incredibly slow as it was clear the restaurant was under staffed. For our family the bill came to £99!!! Totally not worth this amount as the food was worse than Weatherspoons and triple the cost. The best bit was the kids chocolate brownie which was delicious, shame I can’t say the same about my daughters disgusting Macaroni cheese, that she couldn’t eat. You’re no longer the niche french experience, just a mass chain dishing out bland freezer dinners at extortionate prices!!!

A mixed experience

Service was fine and recommendations about the menu were fantastic (we shared the onion soup / charcuterie board for starters), a good wine selection as well (if a little pricey). The only thing that let the experience down was the chocolate fondant for dessert, which was not liquid in the middle so ate more like a cake. Nevertheless we will probably return.
