In the sophisticated Cardiff Bay area, the vibrant atmosphere perfectly accompanies the delicious French cuisine and wine served at Cardiff Quay Café Rouge. There is an outside seating area and Cardiff Bay Rail Station is only a 6-minute walk away.

As part of the nationwide chain of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

In a scenic setting, Café Rouge in Cardiff has an elegant glass-fronted exterior and brasserie-style décor. The National Museum Cardiff and Bute Park are within walking distance.

We all had the Beef Bourignon, which was excellent. The waiting staff were very pleasant and we did not have to wait long for service despite there only being two staff working and the restaurant was quite busy early on a rainy Sunday evening.

Although I'd booked on line and confirmed the booking by phoning the restaurant direct, there wasn't a table reserved for us when we arrived. It wasn't that busy so they found us a table for 6.
The service was extremely slow. We chose the duck confit but were advised that would take 25 mins so we then chose chicken. The order took 45mins to arrive.
Each time we needed a waiter we had to wave, or accost someone, or go up to the bar or till.
Food was good when it arrived but we would have had more courses if they had served us more quickly.

The staff were very attentive, the meals were served promptly even though it was busy. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will be returning soon. We also took advantage of the current on-line voucher offer

We ate three times twice in St David's shopping and once in Mermaid Quay Cardiff, both good food and excellent service , but in Mermaid Quay I was surprised to see a member of staff being told off at the bar for something he had not done correctly, the person who was doing the reprimanding needs to chill and smile more as this means a lot to customers , otherwise most enjoyable!

We arrived for brunch about 10am. There was only one other couple in the restaurant. The meal was very tasty, but the service was absolutely appalling! Our waitress totally ignored us the entire time we were there: we felt as though we were a burden to be served; she did not know the difference between instant and ground coffee; she asked how the meal was but walked off while we were starting the response; there was a long delay before our empty plates were cleared from the table ; and after waiting an eternity to pay by card, she finally came to the till and we had to rush up to the counter to pay before she vacated. She said a meaningless 'thankyou' without so much as a smile or eye contact. It was a most unpleasant dining experience and the first time I did not tip at a restaurant.
