In the centre of the city and a 2-minute walk from Canterbury Cathedral, Café Rouge serves traditional French cuisine. Café Rouge also boasts a large al fresco dining area, just set back from the high street.
As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.
In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.
Surrounded by popular shops, Café Rouge Canterbury offers an authentic French dining experience.

Food good. Served hot. Well presented and well served by the waitress. Shame you did not have the wine requested alternative very good second, Chateauneuf du Pape.

Lovely atmosphere although short staffed and consequently although they were lovely they were rushed off their feet. We had steak and it was either over cooked or under cooked, but not too awful to eat.
We have eaten at this restaurant before and it was lovely and would eat here again.

Unfortunately our dining experience at Cafe Rouge was terrible on this occasion.
Having dined in other Cafe Rouge restaurants previously we were looking forward to eating there, but things were bad from the outset. The wine we ordered was not available and several choices from the main menu were also not available. Once ordered the wait for the main course was ridiculously long, and after several prompts to staff our food appeared. Sadly however one of the chicken dishes was not cooked properly and cold in the centre so had to be returned. We didn't wait for a replacement dish. On ordering dessert we were informed once again that certain dishes were not available despite waiting staff taking orders.
All-in-all our quick lunch took over 2 hours and we were left very disappointed and made complaints to the staff. The saving grace for Cafe Rouge is that given our experience they did not charge us at all for the food and drink we had received. They did this after very little complaint, which was a very honourable gesture.
We'll be back to Cafe Rouge - just maybe not in Canterbury!

Very disappointing.Had to wait 1/2 hour for each course & the food was poor value for money. For example the bread basket & the olives we ordered contained 5 slices of bread & 4 olives.Would have appreciated the waiting staff tell us in advance that there was up to a 40 minute wait on food[over heard this from the table next to us after they complained].

The food and atmosphere were fantastic, but it was coupled with a wait staff that seemed unhappy to be at their job and irritated by a large group celebration, even though we were the only group present on the level.
