Restaurant description

Café Rouge Bournemouth serves French brasserie-style cuisine in a picturesque and vibrant setting. Branksome Rail Station is within easy walking distance of Café Rouge.

As part of the nationwide group of Café Rouge restaurants, this branch offers their range of classic French dishes such as confit duck, beef bourguignon, steak frites and mussels. Smaller dishes are also on offer for a lighter bite. Particularly good value for money are the set menus for lunch and dinner (available most days). To accompany the food there is also a good range of French wines, many from less well known producers.

In true French style, breakfast is also an important meal at Café Rouge. With croissants, pain au chocolat, omelettes and croques, as well as hot chocolate, tea and all types of coffees, it makes a great start to the day.

Café Rouge in Bournemouth has a spacious yet inviting dining area, where the classic flavours of French cuisine can be enjoyed.

Excellent service, great food and wine. Altogether a lovely evening. I had steak frites - always a winner. A starter of a souflé was also great.

It was good. Very easy. Friendly staff. Food served in a timely manner. Staff not overly intrusive. A nice relaxed evening had by all. Only complaint is the ladies toilets. Stairwell banisters very sticky, doors in to toilets very sticky. Toilets clean which is important but then you had to run the gauntlet of the sticky doors and banisters on your way back up.

Dessert/cheese course was nice. Pre-ordering online was very helpful. Good quality prosecco and good value overall. This has always been a dependable restaurant. Waiting staff did not ask if we wanted gravy on the Turkey Paupiette - my partner doesn't like gravy. This was disappointing.

We only had a salad each as going to see a film. Both good. Nice Staff.

Overall I would describe our visit to Cafe Rouge as disappointing and expensive with underwhelming service. The quality of the food just didn't compare to various independent restaurants that we know at a similar price level. My onion soup was a small portion with no sign of any Gruyere cheese as described on the menu and which I had expected to see melting on the soup. My partner's pate was OK but no butter was provided for the bread that came with it so we had to request some. Regarding mains, my dish of moules was OK but my partner's fish cake was quite tasteless. It was served with a small dry salad, so we had to ask for some dressing. We ordered a bottle of Muscadet which arrived at the table insufficiently chilled. The server seemed surprised when I said it wasn't cold enough and requested an ice bucket. She returned with one but with just some ice in the bottom and no water so she had to take it away to add water. Shouldn't a restaurant at this level automatically supply an ice bucket with white wine and know what to do with it ?!? I really don't see why I should have to tell someone how to do their job when I'm there spending good money! For starters, and mains, wine at £19.50, various sundries and coffees the bill came to almost £74. In future we'll stick to independent restaurants where they generally are more motivated to provide good quality of food and service.

food was very good, but small portions. We had starters which were lovely and two steak and frites (small again) and a bottle of red wine. Lovely food, good service, but expensive for the amount of food given. Might go back again for breakfast this time as when we went before that was really good value for money.
