Delightful staff and a delicious light lunch
10 November 2018
Inside the iconic Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Café Modern Two is a stylish eatery that boasts period features, mirrored ceilings, and even sculptures from the gallery itself. Wholesome lunches and traditional afternoon teas are paired with a carefully crafted wine list.
The Café Modern Two menu focuses on wholesome, flavourful European recipes for its lunch menus. Fresh focaccia sandwiches are generously filled, while mains include lightly chargrilled salmon with fresh greens. Warming soups are popular choices, and antipasti platters of cured meats and delicate cheeses are perfect for groups to share.
Afternoon teas at Café Modern Two in Edinburgh are wonderfully traditional, and include warm scones with jam and clotted cream, loose leaf teas, fingers sandwiches, and sweet treats like mini redcurrant and almond cakes.
A tranquil, stylish spot to refuel whilst browsing the galleries, Café Modern Two is moments from the Water of Leith, and only 15 minutes' walk from Haymarket Train Station.

A favourite cafe for many years and I took my grand-daughter there last Saturday. The current staff are keeping up the standards, very welcoming and just the right amount of attentiveness. A couple of issues with the service - we wouldn't have minded the half hour wait for the main course if the side that we'd asked for as a starter had arrived with the (delicious) Paulozzi lager instead of with the main. Partly my bad - should have made that clearer. Food was excellent - my butternut squash and halloumi salad had been prepared with care and attention and was quite delicious and Holly's veggie curry, well, disappeared quite rapidly!

The food was very good - we had chicken Caesar salad followed by one of the delicious cakes and coffee.
It is a great place to meet friends and very reasonably priced for lunch. Parking in the carpark is £2 for the day. The staff were very friendly and happy to help. We’ll definitely be back soon.

Friendly service, excellent afternoon tea, particularly good value in a lovely space. What's not to like? The small and at time quirky taste details e.g.on the chilli jam in the scone topping and the dill in the mayo on the sandwiches were particularly notable.

Afternoon Tea given to us as gift which we thoroughly enjoyed.

I've been coming to Cafe Modern Two for some years, on annual visits to Edinburgh. I've usually had mid-morning coffee or tea - this was only my second lunch there. The main course was OK. The cake that followed was past its best. The service was pleasant and efficient.

Lunch was OK. I had the Cullen Skink which is a very Scottish soup/broth based on smoked haddock. The stock was well balanced and not too creamy, an oft make error. However I would have described the dish as Grannies Tattie Soup as it cintained more potato and less fish, pity! My wife had smoked salmon fish cakes which again contained too much potato and peas (really?) and not very much fish. Oh well, cannot win them all.

The wine is expensive for the type of place this is. The portion of mackerel pate was ridiculously small - literally 3 teaspoons with 2 small oatcakes and a salad garnish. When we complained we were told it was because we had chosen from the light bites menu. We asked to be given some more and were given 2 more tespoons but no more oatcakes. This cost £6.50. The Croque Madame was dry with not enough cheese. The fish cakes were a decent portion but not particularly tasty. They don't do a daily special, despite it saying so when I looked at the menu on the website. We had to go to the counter to ask them to take away our plates and to take our order for coffee. When we complained about the service, nothing was said - no word of apology. One reaso we chose to go there was for the convenient parking but the car park was full at 12.20pm. I have been here before and had a satisfactory meal but I am not sure that I will go again.

I was made to feel very welcome. Food was delicious. I preferred a light lunch, but later, after standing for quite a while in the galleries admiring paintings, I could not resist calling in again for tea and a cake!
