We had a great meal here, the crevettes were a winner and were a good size portion. The staff were excellent even though they were busier than they expected. Definitely worth another visit.

A bright, airy space with a warm ambience, Bowmers serves a versatile seasonal menu of recipes from all over the globe. With a crackling fireplace and modern feel, this is a great spot to sample international flavours made with the freshest produce, including fruit, vegetables and herbs grown by owners Claire and Richard Bowmer.

The Bowmers menu changes with the seasons, and includes recipes from all over Europe and North Africa. Mussels from the River Exe are cooked with Sandford cider and bacon, while the Budleigh crab soufflé is a celebrated speciality. Gourmet mains include the chargrilled lamb rump with cherry and kirsch jus, and the vegetarian mushroom, chard and walnut tart with crisp green salad.

Puddings at Bowmers in Devon are both indulgent and inventive, and include panna cotta with plums poached in red wine and rosemary, and the Bowmers coffee ice cream bathing in coffee liqueur and spiked with a chocolate shard.

Also serving an eclectic international wine list, Bowmers is just a short walk from the local stretch of rugged Devonshire beach.

We have been to Bowmers on numerous occasions. As always the food was excellent. However, the experience turned into one you would expect in a "fast food" chain, get in and get out. Our order was taken promptly, no problem with that but the starter was then served almost within minutes. I then went to the counter and said that we wanted a good break before our main me. The answer came back saying "there is nothing l can do if it is being cooked" and guess what? It was being cooked. i was also told that "we have another 20 diners to think about" My answer is "Don't we matter" Even though the meal was excellent, we left the restaurant really disappointed at the rush: sat at our table at 1900 and leaving the restaurant at 2020

Bright, simple but stylish modern decor. Marine-themed collages on walls...attractive and appropriate. Our table for six had corner bench seats against the wall, so awkward access for the two people sitting at the back. Welcome was cheerful, aperitif wine excellent (Chilean merlot), but no nibbles provided. Young waitress suggested we might like crisps and nuts. Two small bowls arrived promptly...vegetable crisps and nuts...but to our surprise we were later charged £3 for each..excessive, we thought. Background music was too loud for comfortable conversation while we waited for the meal, so we had to ask for volume to be lowered. This was done straightaway. But the food was excellent...well-presented, fresh and delicious. Three of us had baked brie with cranberries for the first course; the others chose succulent smoked salmon marinated in gin. We all chose the venison casserole with purée potatoes and a selection of fresh vegetables. Satisfied, we looked at the dessert menu, but weren't tempted by the Christmas Pudding ice cream, or alternatives we thought would be too sweet. Just as well, as the bill total for the two courses seemed high when we came to settle it. Finally, although the restaurant was not busy ( only two other tables were occupied this lunchtime) , the staff were not around to say goodbye as we left.
To put this in context, we are six friends who get together for a pre-Christmas meal every year, and like to try somewhere new. Although we would definitely recommend the chef, we probably won't be back for a Christmas treat, but would come here to eat at other times of the year. Spotlessly clean toilets, by the way!

Our party of four ate at Bowmers on Friday 1st December and enjoyed a warm welcome and a delicious meal with a pleasant background of delightful music. My favourite dish is always the crab souffle and sometimes I like to order a salad starter and have the souffle as a main course accompanied with French fries and either vegetables or salad. Usually all the desserts are delicious so choosing is the only problem!

Very welcoming and pleasant staff, and the food was very good. Ambience o.k., but a bit more attention to internal decor would be good - sitting in the window of a former bank feels a bit basic without some attempt at making it feel more like a dining room.

Food and service excellent. Crab souffle delicious, likewise the lamb rump and the wonderful desserts. We struggled a little with the noise level, something we have noticed before, but not sure what you can do about this, without introducing carpet or something complicated and expensive! We always enjoy revisiting the restaurant.
