Its been a while since I last dined at Hotel Du Vin and I was very much looking forward to it. My friend and I arrived 20 minutes early for our booking and decided to have a drink in bar. I enquired if the bar stocked Appleton rum and was told yes. The barman produced a bottle of White Appleton rum. I explained that I was after the honey coloured rum rather than white. The barman said 'ah yes, the spiced rum'. To which I replied no, it isn't spiced. The barman then proceeded to repeatedly assure me in a slightly exasperated manner that I was wrong and that it was spiced. Not a great start to the evening. I drink Appleton honey coloured rum frequently and it is not spiced! I ended up with a glass of red wine. My friend and I went through to the restaurant to dine. She is vegetarian and chose the cheese fondue to start. We shared this as it was a generous sized portion and absolutely scrumptious. The only option she had from the prix fixe menu for a main dish was pasta . When it arrived it was plentiful, however, sadly it was completely tasteless. When the waiter came to check all was OK I mentioned that it was tasteless at which point he made the comment that 'we are French' implying that the French don't understand how to make a tasty vegetarian meal. I didn't think this was particularly helpful. On a more positive note, my pig cheek was scrumptious as was the crumble and vanilla ice cream which we had for desert. Overall I was disappointed with the experience and certainly wont rush back with any vegetarian friends.
