We had not eaten at Hotel Du Vin previously but were well aware of its reputation so for a Big birthday celebration it was the perfect choice. We chose the set menu through Booktable for both cost and convenience as we were expected to be a large party. The menu was limited to only 4 choices per course which is more than sufficient but unfortunately all the starters were tomato based, even the broccoli and stilton soup had tomato in it apparently. My son ordered that soup but a fish soup arrived which surprise surprise had a tomato base. He opted to keep it and enjoyed it. The terrine was quite small, overly cold so quite tasteless with dry brioche, no pickle, dressing or salad garnish just a gerkin and two pickled onions. The main courses were small and not very imaginative. The lamb and ratatouille dish was just a small amount of the stew in the centre with a lamb steak, with bone, balanced on the top. It was ok, not great just satisfactory. Dessert took half an hour to arrive. The chocolate dessert turned out to be a pot of mousse with cream on top but was made better by the nice crispy tuile on the side. We were served by a very nice young man who apparently had been drafted in from the Bristol restaurant for the evening and his service was excellent. He was attentive, and polite as were the rest of the staff. The restaurant is quite attractive but unfortunately it was quite cold in there so by 9.30pm a few of us had to put coats on. In summation I would say that Hotel du Vin is a beautiful and very impressive building making for a pleasant evening but the food served was decidedly average at best.

The food was very enjoyable, but a few greens on the plate would have made it perfect. chicken in sauce with just mash can be too rich and a few greens on the plate would make it more appealing in taste and looks

Booking was quick and easy, the deal we had was good value, although at their normal prices I would not recommend.

The bistro was lovely, very atmospheric. Food was excellent, portion sizes for me were perfect as quite small so could have all three courses! I would say that service let us down slightly; the restaurant wasn't busy but our initial waitress didn't seem inclined to help us and was quite sharp. Card machine also wasn't working, which caused a slight issue. Overall, I would definitely visit again.
