Bird of Smithfield is situated in a 5-storey Georgian townhouse complete with rooftop terrace. Sitting alongside London’s only functioning meat market, the abundance of fresh, local meat is far from surprising.

From head chef Tommy Boland, the Bird of Smithfield menu offers a delicious fusion of British gastronomy with French cooking influences. Try starters like Cornish mackerel with oyster, radish and pickled cucumber, followed by roasted turbot with celeriac purée with winter greens, charred potatoes, and hazelnut and black truffle pesto. Desserts include pistachio soufflé with bitter chocolate ice cream.

The dining room is stylishly decked out in tweed and herringbone fabrics, whilst the lounge bar, basement cocktail bar and roof terrace are equally well groomed. Regular food & drinks pop ups are also held at Bird of Smithfield.

Occupying an historic location, Bird of Smithfield is a 5-minute walk from Farringdon and Barbican train stations.

Having been informed that there was no availability for the meal deal, I booked for the a la carte because my husband and I wanted foie gras (the whole purpose of going to The Bird). Upon arrival at 1845, we went up to the 1st floor restaurant and WE WERE THE ONLY CUSTOMERS IN THE RESTAURANT! (There was a private party going on on the ground floor.) This was the case when we left the restaurant at gone 2000! Amazing. Why was there no availability for the meal deal one has to ask oneself. Also, on the restaurant's web site it stated 50% off of food for the whole of January. This was fake news! The restaurant on the 1st floor was pleasant with some items of art on the walls from the private collection of the owner of the restaurant. The Italian waiter was good and 'knew his onions.' The foie gras was delicious but luke warm, as was our main course, breast of guinea fowl. The price of the side vegetables were a tad OTT in my opinion, to wit: £3.50 for a very small ramekin of winter greens. However, I think overall the cost of our entire meal was reasonable for London. The main drawback is that in the evenings the City is dead. Smithfield is quite isolated.

I took my husband for his birthday. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings. Each plate was exquisite and the wine pairings worked perfectly.

The dining room was very quiet- probably not surprising given it is the start of January.

The only negative for my husband was the lighting... the ceiling light behind him in the centre of the room meant that he was eating in his shadow.

The kitchen prepared a second dessert plate with happy birthday written in chocolate on it which my husband loved. A great touch.

We will definitely go again with foodie friends!

Had a delicious lunch, with great service in an elegant dining room. Food and presentation was just lovely. Salmon, scallops and beetroot starters were all beautiful and very tasty. We then had fish for mains, turbot and the sea bass cooked to compliment the excellently cooked fish. Really good coffee to finish. Really want to go back!

We booked the restaurant after previously having a birthday luncheon in the function room that was very much enjoyed by all involved. The food on both my visits was excellent, the service very good, The ambience of the bar and restaurant is both comfortable and elegant and the lemon curd bases pudding was so enjoyable I left a message for the chef that I would have this for my breakfast also, if i could have stayed over.
