The value of the set menu meant we were unsure what to expect - seemed too good to be true. But a thoroughly enjoyable meal, in a pretty first floor dining room, with a short but interesting wine list and attentive but not overly fussy service. Will definitely be back

Bird of Smithfield is situated in a 5-storey Georgian townhouse complete with rooftop terrace. Sitting alongside London’s only functioning meat market, the abundance of fresh, local meat is far from surprising.

From head chef Tommy Boland, the Bird of Smithfield menu offers a delicious fusion of British gastronomy with French cooking influences. Try starters like Cornish mackerel with oyster, radish and pickled cucumber, followed by roasted turbot with celeriac purée with winter greens, charred potatoes, and hazelnut and black truffle pesto. Desserts include pistachio soufflé with bitter chocolate ice cream.

The dining room is stylishly decked out in tweed and herringbone fabrics, whilst the lounge bar, basement cocktail bar and roof terrace are equally well groomed. Regular food & drinks pop ups are also held at Bird of Smithfield.

Occupying an historic location, Bird of Smithfield is a 5-minute walk from Farringdon and Barbican train stations.

I visited Bird of Smithfield for the first time when visiting a good friend for lunch on the Bookatable deal of 3 courses and a glass of Prosecco for £25, and was very impressed with the atmosphere in the first floor restaurant looking out onto Smithfield market, the 3 choices for each course was adequate and very good value for the quality of food we ate , the lamb and plaice mains were the stars , and the relaxed staff made us feel very comfortable during the 3 hours we spent at our table . Would recommend to anyone looking to eat in the Farringdon/Hugh Holborn area.

Ate here two days ago for a dinner after work. The food and service were overall EXCELLENT. I had a delicious bresaola salad for starters and then for mains, breadcrumbed plaice with mussels and parmesan gnocchi. It was divine; so delicately cooked and well-flavoured. For pudding, the options were OK. I always think it’s a cop out when I see cheese and fruit on a dessert menu but that’s just my opinion. So I went for the Strawberry Eton Mess. The other option was a chocolate orange cake thing and chocolate orange is just one of those things that you either love or hate.

We are in the restaurant upstairs where there was a lovely waiter and good atmosphere. The air conditioner was on full blast though and my friend and I both commented on how cold it was. I’d definitely still come back here... with a scarf!

We went for the lunch deal. Had been meaning to go here for ages as we used to eat at the Almeida a lot before the chef moved here. We really like his cooking and weren’t disappointed. Every dish was excellent and the service good but not intrusive. The room is a comfortable space and we had a lovely table by the window. Couldn’t fault it. We’ll be back

Interesting restaurant, bit different to the usual style of high end dining. Very nice food on the tasting menu, and a couple of the paired wines were exceptional. Service/timing was a bit off - it took 10 minutes before anyone took our drinks order then another 10 for them to arrive, by which point the first dish (with matching wine) had arrived. We felt a little bit rushed by the speed at which each course arrived. Perhaps front of house staff need to liaise better with the kitchen to ensure diners aren’t only just getting their aperitifs when the first course is ready.
Also couldn’t understand a word of what the servers said when they explained each course/wine but that was probably due to background noise plus English not their native language. Didn’t really bother us though. All staff were very friendly.
