Very pleasant Christmas atmosphere (carols played on the piano), brilliant service and of course very good food (Lady Betty's tea).

On the picturesque St Helen’s Square, Bettys York is an elegant café serving lunch, dinner and afternoon teas. Inspired by the founder’s experience on the maiden voyage of the Queen Mary, the café is decked out in wood panelling, with large curved windows and ornate mirrors.

Afternoon tea at Bettys York involves a vast selection of teas, served with sweet and savoury delights. Classic blends join exotic black, green and white teas, as well as herbal blends on the lengthy tea menu. Traditional fresh sandwiches are followed by freshly baked sultana scones with strawberry preserve and Yorkshire clotted cream, as well as a selection of handmade cakes.

Add a touch of indulgence to afternoon tea with a glass of champagne, or sample the wide choice of specialty coffees, world wines, and local ales. Bettys also hosts regular events and live music, making it a lively venue day and night.

Bettys York is a 9-minute walk from York Train Station.

We loved every aspect of Bettys. We were there for my birthday, and they were all so cheerful and kind about that. The fact that they brought me a little petit four in a box to celebrate my day later was icing on the perfect cake. The service was exceptional, the live piano music was a fabulous touch, and she was very good. I noticeably missed her when she took a small break and was so happy to have her come back to play more. The dining room was beautiful, the volume was never overbearing. The china and cutlery were beautiful. The food was delightful, and the two types of tea I tried were glorious. That goat cheese and cartelized red onion sandwich was to die for. I just loved, loved, loved it all!

Absolutely fantastic service. Friendly, attentive and accommodating. The atmosphere was lovely, with a talented pianist playing different songs from musicals as we ate. Overall the experience of having afternoon tea there was spectacular. The food was absolutely delicious, and the Battenberg was the best I've ever tasted!

Service was extraordinary! Teas were magnificent! Food was average, although well presented. I felt that I was paying for the "name" and not the service/tea experience. I would have preferred a cake selection and not petit fours (although this is purely my preference). I would not recommend this experience to families, it is too costly.

Totally enjoyable experience with the girls. Ages from 13 to 55 and all loved it!

The experience at Betty's was excellent and certainly lived up to its reputation. The first-floor decor is amazingly period and atmospheric and if you didn't know you were in the centre of York, you could be forgiven for thinking that you had been transported to a 1920s cruise ship. Absolutely gorgeous! This effect was reinforced by the tinkling of the ivories by a very good piano player putting out some well-known tunes appropriate to the setting.

The welcome by the staff was perfect and the process was explained well. We went for the champagne to start with, as we were celebrating a birthday. The choice of teas was taxing, as there were 18 choices to read through and all sounded delightful, but we eventually made a decision! When it came, the food was lovely. Well-cut sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and small sweet cakes. We all went for a refill of the sandwiches as we had deliberately skipped breakfast. The tea was replenished when we asked for it.

As an example of customer service, I had mentioned while booking online that it was my wife's birthday and, as the pianist played Happy Birthday, the staff brought out little birthday cakes to the various customers that were celebrating that day. I imagine that this is a common enough occurrence, as there were at least 4 birthday celebrations during our time-slot.

In terms of value for money, the portions are refined, not sizeable. However, we were not at all hungry at the end of the meal. With the champagne option, it came to just under £40 per head. Not cheap, but in line with the total experience.

I would advise booking the upstairs, as the queues for the ground-floor and basement were fairly lengthy.

Would I go there again? Probably not, purely because we live in London and this was a family visit. As Betty's tea room is a bit of a local tradition, it was definitely one thing to make sure we did, and it was a very pleasant box to have ticked off the bucket list. I would recommend it.

We had a lovely dining experience at Betty's. The Lady Betty's afternoon tea has a great selection of food - our favourites were the pork and apple pie and the rose scone! The tea selection was amazing and we loved that there was piano music playing in the background.
