Situated within easy reach of London’s Theatreland, The Bear & Staff is a traditional pub boasting a friendly atmosphere, a choice of ales and a modern twist on the traditional British menu. Housed in a building dating back to 1873 what is now our dining room was once a small theatre favoured by Charlie Chaplin, who occasionally used it for rehearsal space.
Since Nicholson’s pubs were first established in 1873, these traditional British inns have become synonymous with warm hospitality, hearty pub food and a speciality range of ales. As well as always featuring British pub classics like beer-battered fish & chips and gammon & eggs, the Bear & Staff menu is complemented by a rotating selection of pie, sausage & chop and fish specials for each season.
The Bear & Staff bar is always stocked with exquisite gins, warming whiskies and fine wines to pair with favourite meals, and there’s always a superb range of seasonal and regional real ales on offer. A constant at the bar is the St Austell-brewed Nicholson’s Pale Ale, made with Cornish Maris Otter malts, and a hand-picked blend of English hops.
Bear & Staff in – Leicester Square is a minute’s walk from Leicester Square Tube Station and a 5-minute walk from Covent Garden Tube Station, Shaftesbury Avenue and Chinatown.

The restaurant is above the bar. Although it is a small place, the atmosphere was nice. The waiter was very attentive and efficient. Food was good and good value for money

Lovely welcome. Really liked the old/traditional feel of the place. The lady server was a real fun character - makes a change from overly formal waiters. Food was good, served in a timely, but not rushed fashion. Really relaxed feel to the whole meal made it more enjoyable.

Had a delicious meal at the Bear & Staff before seeing a musical. Fantastic menu, lots of choice and good value. We had a window seat so could take in the bustling streets below. Gemma was an excellent host, very friendly and extremely efficient. I would highly recommend this restaurant !

Service excellent. Fish wasn't cooked properly. Four of our party left it. Given one free meal as compensation. Great room and view.

Negative: staff was not aware of our booking, then when she thought she could arrange a table, she did not listen to the number of seats we needed. She took it for granted that there were just the two of us (rest of our party came in a little bit later). Thankfully, other diners left and we were able to get a table for 6. Seems only 1 staff member was officially assigned in a very busy dining area and was not fully engaged. One of us did not get his food order (at all!)! Another round of drinks had to be repeated and reminded. Management need to sort out! Positive: fantastic food, beautiful dining room which impressed English friends who came home from abroad!

I had booked a table online for three of us to have a pre-theatre dinner but when we arrived the waitress in the dining room said she didn't have our booking despite me having e-mail confirmation on my phone. Luckily there were some tables spare so we were able to get seated. We had seen the pre-theatre dinner menu on the website which was 2 meals for £11.00 but we were only given the normal menu. I didn't say anything as the booking was a suprise for my Mum's birthday and the food on the menu was reasonably priced. Two of us had the hunters chicken and I had the gammon steak which was delicious. All the food was absolutely amazing and the dining room was a fabulous place to eat in with lots of pictures of Charlie Chaplin on the walls as he used to rehearse there when it was a small theatre in 1878. The Christmas decorations were up so it all felt lovely and cosy. We would definatley go back again but they just need to sort out their booking from the website as it doesn't seem to work!
