Situated within easy reach of London’s Theatreland, The Bear & Staff is a traditional pub boasting a friendly atmosphere, a choice of ales and a modern twist on the traditional British menu. Housed in a building dating back to 1873 what is now our dining room was once a small theatre favoured by Charlie Chaplin, who occasionally used it for rehearsal space.
Since Nicholson’s pubs were first established in 1873, these traditional British inns have become synonymous with warm hospitality, hearty pub food and a speciality range of ales. As well as always featuring British pub classics like beer-battered fish & chips and gammon & eggs, the Bear & Staff menu is complemented by a rotating selection of pie, sausage & chop and fish specials for each season.
The Bear & Staff bar is always stocked with exquisite gins, warming whiskies and fine wines to pair with favourite meals, and there’s always a superb range of seasonal and regional real ales on offer. A constant at the bar is the St Austell-brewed Nicholson’s Pale Ale, made with Cornish Maris Otter malts, and a hand-picked blend of English hops.
Bear & Staff in – Leicester Square is a minute’s walk from Leicester Square Tube Station and a 5-minute walk from Covent Garden Tube Station, Shaftesbury Avenue and Chinatown.

After the initial denial of having booked a £7 lunch deal on their site, for which they did not have the menu, all went well when I showed them the booking and the menu. There was a delay of about 25 minutes for the food to be served which was surprising given lack of clientele ( more to do with the searing hot weather than anything else) but the wait was well worth it, very well cooked meal and more than adequate. The lady serving was attentive and friendly and to my surprise on going to pay the manager had told here to only charge for the meal and not the drinks we had given the initial denial. An unexpected and pleasant gesture showing in my view the manager did not want to have unhappy clients.
This is the second visit to this pub in the heart of theatre land and it will not be our last given the service we received.

Excellent and efficient service combined with delicious Sunday roast vegetarian lunch made this a very pleasant experience. We had a window table which looked out over the theatres, and the tables were well separated, so no cramped sensations. Very good choice of wines by the glass. The restaurant is well appointed and spotlessly clean. Outstanding value for money.

They were not aware of my booking and said 'Bookatable' had not informed them. The dining area upstairs is not open lunch times! Very few small tables in the pub but fortunately we managed to put two together. Food was decent pub fare and service was good. Prices reasonable. Overall atmosphere very good.

The restaurant is above the bar. Although it is a small place, the atmosphere was nice. The waiter was very attentive and efficient. Food was good and good value for money

Lovely welcome. Really liked the old/traditional feel of the place. The lady server was a real fun character - makes a change from overly formal waiters. Food was good, served in a timely, but not rushed fashion. Really relaxed feel to the whole meal made it more enjoyable.

Had a delicious meal at the Bear & Staff before seeing a musical. Fantastic menu, lots of choice and good value. We had a window seat so could take in the bustling streets below. Gemma was an excellent host, very friendly and extremely efficient. I would highly recommend this restaurant !
