Good restaurant with orangery area for pleasant atmosphere on a summer evening. Food was satisfactory but not outstanding. Service was extremely slow and chasing needed for some courses.

Enjoy AA Rosette-awarded dining at Bartley Lodge Hotel, a secluded woodland hideaway in the New Forest. Refined British cuisine is served in the hotel’s sophisticated Crystal Restaurant.

Signature dishes on the Bartley Lodge menu range from a cod brandade, with spiced puy lentils and cauliflower beignets, to a contemporary twist on the British ham hock, served with pea puree and herb-crusted hen’s egg. Traditional British mains like ale-battered fish and chips and honey-glazed ham can be followed by a warm poached pear with mulled-wine sorbet, whilst cheeses are a proud local selection featuring an exciting garlic and nettle option.

A former library, the elegant Bartley Lodge restaurant in Lyndhurst welcomes diners with toasty open fires in winter and open French doors in summer, which lead out into the hotel’s beautiful gardens. Breakfast can be taken in style with the addition of a glass of chilled champagne.

A tranquil woodland retreat, Bartley Lodge Hotel is a 6-minute drive from Lyndhurst, and 3 minutes from the M27.

It was a quiet night when we entered and it took a minute or so to get some attention, this I think was due to numbers there and minimal waiting staff to service them. Whilst we don't mind waiting to get a menu and then have our orders taken I found it a little disappointing that as there were so few people there that the waiting staff were not as attentive as we would have hoped. It's very pleasant to sit in a place like the orangery and a little pampering would have added to the general ambience of the place. The waiter was nevertheless friendly and we exchanged a few chuckles.
I had pre-ordered our meals so it didn't take too long to get the first course which we had last time we came, a very tasty soup of the chef's recipe. we would normally be offered home made bread and olive oil dip but I had to ask for it this time and it arrived somewhat down the line into the soups, rather than before. Still delicious.
My wife had the lamb hotpot which was very well cooked with tasty and tender lamb and there was a lot of it. I always find that the menu is somewhat limited for me as the prices for steaks are quite high and the rest of the menu usually offers a relatively minimal choice of dishes. Being on an offer stayover we only had £25 each to be able to spend which limits one's choices unless one is prepared to pay extra.
My own choice was the burger which I usually have and is always of excellent quality, the meat is first class and is well presented and very tasty.
Deciding to get drinks (rather than order via the waiter) I walked down to the other end of the hotel by reception but there was no-one manning the bar, after several minutes I gave up and returned to order via the waiter.
Since the new chef started the quality of food has gone up a notch and he has introduced some new dishes, I look forward to sampling more of them.

Food was good and well cooked although portions were on the small side. Nice large table for the six of us. Ambience was relaxing in an attractive period building. A bit quiet in terms of atmosphere but it was a Monday evening at 7.00 pm so guess it was to be expected

Lounge seating was very relaxed and comfortable. Disappointed at the reduction in scone size since last visiting in August 2017. Previous visit staff very attentive and scones warmed and offered more sandwiches on regular basis by staff. This visit had to request more sandwiches, waited 1/2 hour for staff to return to ask if we still wanted them of which we declined having finished the sweet course. Chicken salad returned to kitchen due to looking as though it had been sat around for a long period of time, brown lettuces leaves which was not due to balsamic vinegar as suggested.

It was excellent. Great food, service and atmosphere. The band playing was an added bonus

Lovely food. It was unexpected to have the band in the other room playing while we were eating which was really nice.

A party of 7 of us ladies came for afternoon tea to celebrate a 70th birthday. We were welcomed by reception staff and shown to a small, comfortable lounge area with a wonderful roaring fire. Real or not, we couldn't fathom, but it certainly added to the atmosphere. It gave us time to sit and chat until a short time later we were shown into the afternoon tea room. Another atmospheric situation. Immediately we were asked by a lovely young lady, which tea we would like and this was brought immediately then along came the cake stands with a wonderful array of cakes and scones. It was all wonderful and sooo tasty! We were just a little disappointed that the cups were not bone china, but this was the only thing we could fault. We were continually asked if we would like more pots of tea and they just kept coming!
We sat for what must have been two hours and nobody rushed us away. It was a very nice afternoon and one we will all remember with great delight. Thankyou to all the staff at Bartley Lodge for making this birthday a memorable occasion.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The dining room was nicely set. Plenty of fresh tea. The sandwiches were fine but the scones were disappointing. They were very dry and hard.

A friend and I visited for afternoon tea. The hotel is lovely, set in beautiful grounds and yet just off the M27, so very accessible. The hotel is charming, lots of little seating areas with comfy chairs and sofas. We were welcomed and shown to our table in the conservatory where we could take in the view as it was too chilly to sit outside. Sandwiches were tasty and obviously freshly cut, our tea was replenished with fresh cups regularly and the scones and patisserie were exceptional!
