Restaurant description

Following the success of their Netil Market stand and BAO Soho, BAO Fitzrovia is the second restaurant from Shing Tat Chung, Wai Ting Chung and Erchen Chang.

The BAO menu features the team’s famous BAO buns, plus “Xiao Chi” small eats and a selection of sharing dishes. Signature bao fillings include confit pork, cod black and beef short rib, whilst beef cheek nuggets and the pork belly rice bowl are amongst the flavour-packed snacks.

Upstairs at BAO London, the laidback dining space is centred around a stool-lined wooden counter, whilst seating downstairs looks onto the open kitchen.

Find BAO restaurant a short walk from both Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road Tube stations.

Food is good. Ambience is good. The service was really bad. As if you are in chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Understand if it was crowded and people queuing outside, it was pretty empty cos it was pouring rain and we were seating at the bar section (Easy to clean as they keep taking the empty plate once it’s finished). I didnt ask for the bill yet, they already gave us the bill and minutes after they brought the card machine. I booked for 12:30pm, at 1:15pm they rushed me to leave by doing that.

Bao has the most beautiful minimalistic interior and design, which makes for great ambience - I'd go there just for that. Luckily the food, drinks and service suit the venue! Some great unexpected music was playing there the last time I went too.

All the food was delicious - especially the bao buns and the chicken chop. Service and atmosphere was great, however the plates probably came out too many at a time. Understandably this means higher turnover for the restaurant, but for a dinner out it can seem rushed and put pressure on diners to leave quickly - especially when you'd be keen to order a few more drinks.

This was my first time at the fitzrovia branch and I think I actually much prefer it to the soho one personally. The fact you can book a table is great, staff are really friendly and helpful. Lovely fresh atmosphere upstairs. I had the black cod bao which was amazing, and my friend had the classic and confit pork which were apparently super tasty too - he even went for a second confit one. I also had the aubergine rice which was tasty, despite being a teeny bit spicy for me (but I'm a whimp!). My only couple of gripes would be that the portions aren't massive (but for a fiver I guess you probably can't complain too much!) and I wasn't blown away by their cocktail list. The Pinot Gris I had was pretty nice though I have to say. Overall, would highly recommend!

Mini Bao provided a nice overview of the selection. Combined with a couple of sharing dishes it was a nice lunch.
