From Michelin-starred chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin, Galvin at The Athenaeum champions the finest in British produce. Stepping away from their trademark French-inspired menus, the brothers have created a menu around modern British dishes while continuing to include a few longstanding Galvin favourites.
The menu showcases a host of rich flavours in dishes such as charcoal-grilled rib-eye with duck fat parmentier, Brixham plaice with brown shrimps and capers and Portland crab linguine. Galvin classics include steak tartare with toasted sourdough and their famous apple tart tatin. A set menu for lunch and early dining features delicious dishes such as Dingley Dell pork belly with apricots and harissa mash, sea bream with orzo, courgette and lemon and Isle of Wight tomatoes with lovage and cottage cheese.
Breakfast is served daily and the terrace is open every day from 8 am-11 pm.

Everything about our dining experience was wonderful. From being seated all the way through to dessert. The partridge was our favourite (aside from the shotgun pellet in one!). This was our second time dining, and will definitely be back in the new year.

The front of house staff were friendly and nice. We booked for 7.15 expecting the meal to be finished by 8.45 at the latest as we had tickets to a comedy show booked. We were seated on time and the first course was delivered quickly. The second course however took over 45minutes and we only received after enquiring about it and mentioning that we had to leave before 9. The service was extremely slow, we requested the last course to be cancelled or boxed and waiting for the bill took over 20minutes so we ended missing out on going to the comedy show we had booked. We found the service frustrating overall

We had a very pleasant meal here with attentive staff. The set menu was tasty even if the soup was not the one described on the menu. The atmosphere is calm and it made for a relaxing early evening dinner.

I was a bit doubtful, because it is a not hugely classy hotel restaurant. We went because they were doing an offer of a no-choice menu plus glass of wine for £28. But the food was really very good, each course of the menu both interesting and well done, and service was good. Included wine was very bland. Amazing how the bill creeps up though...

Having eaten at a couple of other Galvin restaurants, we were looking forward to the Athenaeum. But...
We arrived and asked to have a drink at the bar first. It took a couple of conversations amongst the staff to tell us bar was closed for a private party but we could have a drink in the lobby. We ordered 2 glasses of their house champagne, but were brought 2 glasses of the pink version instead. Waitress didn’t say a word as she put them down and when I remarked “oh, that’s the rose” she turned and walked off!
Went through for supper. Lovely soup.
Ordered and received a very nice carafe of the Galvin rhone. Then almost an hour wait for the main course. Without explanation. There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing but no one spoke to us. And it wasn’t busy. 10 or 12 covers including us.
So we nursed our red for quite a while. The partridge when it arrived was lovely. Again barely a mention of the delay, although they were clearly conscious of it.
Then cheese appeared very quickly - so fast that they brought it and put it down while my girlfriend was in the loo, which is usually a no no.
And then pudding arrived. We had chosen a glass of sweet wine to go with it but the waiter put the pudding down and turned on his heel without a word, giving me no chance to order.
When we left the lady at the front desk asked how everything was and I said the food was lovely but on 3 counts the service was lacking - wrong fizz, an hour wait for the main course, and no chance to order sweet wine. She said something strange about new staff and then smiled and said I’ll pass your compliments on to the chef, they always appreciate good feedback. Astounding.
A real shame because the food was very nice but just frustrating to sit through. Needless to say I won’t be heading back in a hurry!

We saw an offer of £28.50 for 4 courses plus glass of wine so went for it last Saturday. When she saw the menu one of our party decided to go for the a la carte but the rest of the party (3 others) stuck with the offer. Food was ok but the experience was disappointing. Our table was near the kitchen door and not in the main part of the restaurant so there was a lack of ambiance for us. We'd got there early and thought we would like a pre dinner drink but although there seemed to be some sort of seating area near the entrance of the restaurant we were directed to the hotel bar which in fact was very pleasant. I wouldn't go back and can't really recommend this restaurant.
