Part of The Good Pub Guide's Pub Group of The Year 2016, and Sandwiched between the cobbled streets of a historic market town, the Grade II listed Archangel hotel and restaurant in Frome, Somerset offers a contemporary take on classic European dishes. Previously a medieval coaching house, the Archangel is spread out over a 3-floor mezzanine and boasts an ivy-strewn courtyard for al fresco dining and live music performances.

Seasonal and regionally farmed produce occupy the Archangel menu. Dishes include chargrilled Cajun chicken breast with mushrooms, bacon & fine bean fricassee, and haddock fillet with saffron potato and fennel broth, Palourde clams, tomato and coriander.

The restaurant pairs contemporary, minimalist furnishing with Renaissance-style décor whilst exposed brickwork and feudal oak beams frame the vast dining area. Offset by a warming log fire and plush velvet sofas, the striking zinc-capped bar in the Archangel restaurant bar specialises in serving high quality real ales.

A 5-minute drive from Frome Rail Station, the Archangel hotel and restaurant also caters to large groups courtesy of The Cube, an elevated platform where up to 12 people can sit.

Lovely cocktails, excellent ambience, fantastic starters but very poor main dishes - cold souffles, lukewarm pork and the smallest portion of slow roasted sirloin I have ever seen. Best option seemed to be the burger from the bar menu rather than anything off the a la carte menu. Extremely disappointing as we had booked for a special occasion and left feeling extremely disappointed. Serving staff were trying their best, but overall very poor.

Ive eaten here before and its always been good. admittedly the evening not lunch time. The moules and frites were very poor ive never been served moules in a sauce so thick there was no requirement for the spoon and consequently only ate half as it was so stodgy. Plus for some reason the spare bowl for the mussel shells was served under the moules itself so had to lift a hot bowl of mussels to retrieve the said bowl, crazy! Service was ok but not particularly enthusiastic. The rest of the food was good however Just a bit disappointed as it was a treat and felt let down.

Quite a few items were missing from the menu, as it was the 28th & 29th December - post busy weekend! We did understand, although this may well have limited the choices for people with more stringent dietary requirements. However, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only thing that seemed to be a problem was to get simple drinks, i.e. Gin and Tonic, ..... which Gin do you want? Quite alot of 'designer gins' (pricey) then what about a Whisky soda? Which whisky? Another member of staff then went off to warm a brandy glass (?) and took down a bottle of Laphroigh. I spotted it, thankfully, as Laphroigh has a very peaty, smokey flavour and why would you warm a glass for it to put with soda? Anyway, all was sorted, but it did take a bit of time and the bar was not full of customers.

The Archangel in Frome is great; the food is interesting and plentiful with a good choice, the atmosphere is buzzing and the service exemplary. Not the first time we've eaten there nor will it be the last.
