A true taste of rustic dining from the south of Italy, Apulia is a charming, rustic trattoria that's just moments from Smithfield Market. Specialising in Puglian cuisine, this is an intimate little spot with quirky design touches like vintage bicycles on the wall and weathered white wooden furniture.

Classic Puglian family recipes made with authentic ingredients using traditional methods are the focus on the Apulia menu, starting off with rustic appetisers like marinated beef tartare with fennel and sun-dried tomatoes, and oven-baked caciocavallo cheese with braised apple, raisins and honey. Freshly made pasta delicacies feature options like slow-cooked duck ragu, and spaghetti with sea urchin pulp, fresh tomatoes and coffee powder. Perfectly fired pizzas are made with a carefully guarded dough recipe, and topped with imported meats and other Italian treats.

All desserts at Apulia in Barbican are homemade, and include baked dough ball filled with custard cream and sour cherry, and the gluten-free almond and chocolate cake. The wine list offers up celebrated Italian vintages, and there are a selection of irresistible homemade breads served also.

A truly authentic trattoria in London, Apulia is seconds from historic attractions like the William Wallace Memorial, and only a 3-minute walk from Barbican Tube Station.

Overall very nice - service good and attentive; lovely Chianti. Starters were delicious but the mains for three of us a little disappointing...the vongole pasta was over-cooked and lacked flavour i.e. garlic. My friend had the sea bass and I think it was a bit under-cooked but he wasn't too keen.

I have been before and it seemed just slightly less good and interesting. My choices were very good (and Pugliese), but one of my companion's choices (Iasange - not very Pugliese) was poor and another's (strozzapreti salsiccia e funghi) nothing special. The place is still very nice, the service pleasant and efficient. I would go again, but only if I were in the area. And my advice is to choose the Pugliese dishes.

Good atmosphere at Apulia and friendly service. The food is southern Italian and lots of unusual items on the menu, particularly love the different focaccias and pastas

Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, food came quickly. I am lactose intolerant, and there are only very limited options for someone with an intolerance - and when I ordered pizza without the cheese, staff was a bit startled, and the Pizza came out looking pretty empty and sad (which tells me cheese is a big filler). I wasn't offered any alternative ingredients to replace the cheese, and had to ask for something extra myself - and disappointingly they could've made it look less sad, as my dining partner's pizza was covered in rocket and mine just looked.. sad. Could do much more to cater to folks with intolerances, otherwise pretty nice place on the whole.
