Alimentum's food was mostly delicious and some of the staff were particularly attentive, whilst being unobtrusive. They even remembered to bring me my hat without me asking for it at the end of the meal! The ambience and decor was pleasant (the live piano music in the background adding to the atmosphere), but not as inspiring as some other fine dining restaurants. Value was on par with most places in Cambridge (e.g. Cotto's), but Cambridge is overall more expensive than many other places – especially continental Europe.
Being extremely pernickety, a few points could be improved:
The waitress who served us and described our food was friendly, but had a strong accent, and was not always easy to understand. She seemed less comfortable than the other staff.
Some of the food worked extremely well, other elements were less convincing. The trio presented on a bed of pebbles, for instance, had a wonderful cone with chicken liver parfait and an unusual and interesting cracker with raw pollock (if I understood correctly), but the third element with chorizo didn't have the same balance of flavours. The ox cheek was excellent, but the sweetbreads were slightly chewy. The coffee and passionfruit dessert had very pungent elements that came together nicely, though the passion fruit element was a little too tart for me personally.

Highlights and lowlights from our dining experience at the Alimentum restaurant in Cambridge.
We choose from the a la carte menu as opposed to the tasting menu, tho you would be forgiven for thinking that the mackerel and scallop starters were part of the tasting menu, so tiny were they in size portion. We regularly eat at Michelin restaurants, we are familiar with size portions offered.
The scallop was one, literally, of the highlights, the mackerel was just ok, a bit overpowering in flavours.
Pigeon main, a large portion, as if in some way, to make up for the minuscule starter, was very good, rich and tender with some welcome brassica, the Duck, less so, a little unrefined in presentation.
Dessert, tart Tatin, was a disappointment, sharp taste, lacking the buttery caramel syrup, a decent tatin demands. A selection of fine cheeses, was delicious.
The meal as a whole, didn't gel... bread lovely, amuse bouche decent, palate cleanser, so sharp as to bring tears to the eyes. House champagne excellent, and very good recommendation from the sommelier on wine choice. Staff friendly.

Nice staff if a little inexperienced , we were seated next to the window into the kitchen , there were five or so plastic tubs with food in and a very grubby chopping board in view ...we asked to be seated elsewhere .
The food to be honest was very average ...no amazing flavour in anything .
My main course of duck was fleshy and the fat soggy . I returned it to be cooked a little more but it was returned in pretty much the same state . The accompaning veg were dull and tasteless .
The cheese trolley was great but the foamy amuse bouchée was awful .
Maybe Monday isn't the night to visit but even so we were very disappointed .
The wine was great .

It is my second time visiting this restaurant. I went both times for lunch as it was such great value with the restaurants providing complimentary courses. Even though I do love the food, I have two complaints. One is that the waiter serving us (and from what I see, to the other table), took away the complimentary canapés before we finish it. He grabbed the dish so quickly that I could not stop him... Well it's not that we love the dish that much but I HATE FOOD WASTE. Secondly, there is only one option each for vegetarians in the starter and main course, so I ended up having the same food each time I visited. Though I don't mind having them a third time, I want the restaurant to show that they appreciate vegetarian foodies by developing at least two choices each!
