Restaurant description

The Waldorf has an illustrious history and rich heritage dating back 111 years to 1908. It is with pleasure that they welcome you to experience a traditional afternoon tea in all its grandeur.

The creation of this English tradition was established by a friend of Queen Victoria, Anna Maria Russel, Duchess of Bedford. She noticed a long gap between lunch and late supper and found a light meal of tea, cakes and sandwiches was the perfect solution. Today we know this as “Afternoon Tea”.

Enjoy a variety of delicious cakes and sandwiches together with a full range of Hope & Glory Tea at The Waldorf Hilton.. The team at Hope & Glory has made it their mission to help boost Britain’s love affair with tea. Bringing innovative new blends and trusted favourites to The Waldorf Hilton, Hope & Glory is one of the only true family owned businesses in the United Kingdom that offers the complete premium tea experience with their exquisitely prepared 100% organic blends.

Afternoon Tea at The Waldorf Hilton is one of the most pure London experiences, whether tasting it at the Good Godfreys terrace in a bespoke individual box or having a full experience served inside the hotel. Covent Garden Tube Station is only 6 minutes’ walk away.

Dishes displayed on a la carte menus are representative of the type of food available at the restaurant.

The room and location was a 9/10. It was a beautiful impressive room. Sadly, that was the only thing we had liked about the afternoon tea. The food was below average. The bread was a bit stale with the thinnest line of filling I have ever seen in a sandwich. The scones were tiny and when I asked if we could have more scones, this was met with disapproval. The main dessert log type thing was so sweet, you would need a penicillin shot after eating it. The macaroon and black forest chocolate cake was great. Overall, I would say the food was a 3/10. They could do a lot more as half the battle is already won with that beautiful setting.

Absolutely delightful afternoon tea. Loved the free flowing champagne and our server Fabio was very kind.

I asked for the free flowing champagne, and they said they didn't have anything like that, yet the two tables next to me were given free flow champagne. I was already well into my afternoon tea, so couldn't ask for it then. Very disappointed. Sandwiches were average, a little stale. The cakes were decent though.

I have known the Waldorf from the 1960s so that is why I chose it. The beautiful decor is just the same, and the same goes for the ambience. The sandwiches and cakes combined with the afternoon tea were first class. I found the service second to none. I am gluten free and have Diverticular disease. Particular attention was afforded to me pertaining to my requirements. I was very impressed. I found the background music in tune ( no pun intended), with the atmosphere. A delightful afternoon. My only complaint was the scruffiness of some of the other customers. I would have expected a higher dress code.

Disappointing even making allowances for COVID precautions. The Waldorf website showed a TakeHome afternoon tea so we weren't sure what we were getting. Huge restaurant with only a few tables around the edge and no atmosphere or music. Only one other table occupied through out our stay, two serving staff at first, reduced to one after 10 minutes. Five minutes after being seated, the waiter asked if we would like tea which then took 10 minutes to arrive in little teapots, lukewarm but no milk. After 20 minutes he brought a stand with 4 tiny scones (jam and cream) and 8 little cakes. No sandwiches so we thought that was all we were getting. We asked for water twice before we got two glasses. As we finished the cakes, he apologised that he had forgotten to give us the sandwiches which were then served. Bread was quite dry perhaps because they had been sitting in the kitchen for 45 minutes. We asked for more tea and got one small teapot full instead of one each.and had to ask for more teaspoons as the waiter had cleared the others away. We asked for and got a takeaway box for leftover sandwiches. We then waited another 10 minutes to catch someone's eye to get the bill and another 10 to receive it. Waiter was polite but not very efficient. All in all, quite a let down and certainly not worth the cost..

The building is old and wonderful. The afternoon tea was less than I expected for such an old and supposedly high reputation hotel I was a bit disappointed the tea was cold and the scones were hard. But a lovely experience on a special day.
