We had afternoon tea at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on the occasion of my birthday. It was excellent especially in the new Tea Room very comfortable. The food for afternoon tea was very nice indeed, very fresh and good coffee. We go there now and again for a special occasion.

    Very friendly and efficient BUT
Some work going on in the foyer - drilling not conducive to the idea of a special, expensive birthday treat

The food was very good, lovely selection of very fresh sandwiches, cakes and scones (with proper thick cream). The tea was also lovely, served in a large china pot with china cups and plates. So, the tea itself and the surroundings of the tea room were very nice. However, the service was patchy. At times we were asked three times in the space a few minutes if we needed anything, drinks, etc and at other times no one was available. We were booked in for tea at 1615 and by the end of our slot we felt we were really being rushed out although there were a number of other diners still in the tea room and further behind in their slot than we were. That may be a little picky but the whole experience of afternoon tea is very social and usually extended. The waiter we were allocated, although he was generally attentive enough (although it seemed pretty rushed), had what seemed to be quite a large stain of blood on his shirt (it could have been something else but that's what it looked like). There were also food stains on his tie. It just doesn't give a good impression of hygiene and presentation. We moved into the bar after tea for a cocktail or two and the service there was very similar, patchy. Three waiters in a row when we didn't want anything and none when we did. So as our last drink was delivered I asked for the bill as I wasn't sure when I'd see a waiter again. Overall, food good, drinks good but we won't go back.

A very good experience in a lovely room with attentive staff. The afternoon tea was a good variety of sandwiches and cakes with enough for 2 as we left some. Which were offered to take away. Only downside was they took a long time to get the card machine so I could pay.

The food was well made and presented, tasty and beautifully presented. Unfortunately the standard seems to have deteriorated since I first went 8 years ago. I can see that the tea rooms are very busy and therefore need to produce higher quantities of food but I feel this has limited the standards. There were not enough staff in the tea room to give attention to the diners. Our tea was brought in a standard tea pot as they had no large China pits available. We asked to take cake home but we're told there were no boxes left. Very disappointing. I also have a gluten intoleranve. The cakes provided were leaning towards loaf cakes which last longer and are easy to freeze. How lovely it would be to have somewhere that recognised that people who are gluten intolerant would love nothing more than a traditional afternoon tea with vistoria sponge ir chocolate cake slice. All easily achaivable with modern flours.
